最初は「何か怪しいアニメだなあ」と思っていたけど、
ところがどっこいお洒落でステキな作品ですよ。

めちゃめちゃハマリました！！

回を追う毎に（決闘を繰り返す毎に）デュエリスト達の胸の内がさらけ出されて、
ウテナの世界が深まっていきました。

すごいワンパターンなのに、引き込まれ方がすごい。

人間が誰しも持っている本音と建て前を、
デュエルという形でぶつけ合わせた手腕は見事です。

人間誰でもそのバランスに苦しんでいるものですし。

ぜひ、ウテナの世界を味わって下さい！！

（けどねー、理事長の言う「世界の果て」って結局何だったんだ？）

王子になることを夢見る傍ら、王子との再会を求めて止まない主人公の少女ウテナと、
寡黙で清楚ながら翳があり、多くの他人から執拗に憎まれ、執拗に愛されるアンシー。
物語はこのふたりを中心に描かれながら、しかし「世界を革命する」ことに執着して止まない美しい少年少女たち。
だけど痛ましい妄執が、バラのモチーフと共に散っている。とても鮮やかで、かつユニークな作品だと思う。

最大の魅力はやはり少年と少女が、想いを剣に託して戦うことにある。
世界を革命することとはつまり、己を曲げることなく生きるためであり、
心の傷と胸の薔薇を頑なにかばいつつ、彼らは世界を手に入れようとする。

そんな鮮烈な純粋さと、描き割のようなシュールさが入り乱れる、魅力的な作品です。

「お姫様」を守る為に「ボクは王子様になるんだ！」
と公言してはばからない主人公ウテナ。
そして、成り行きも手伝って薔薇の花嫁アンシーを
救う為に決闘を…。
でも、ウテナは「花嫁」としてでなく、アンシーに
「君とトモダチになりたいんだ」という。

これだけだと一見女の子同士の友情がテーマのように見える。

勿論それもあるが、根底には、実は奥深いジェンダー論
があるように私には思えるのだ。

アンシーの兄はウテナに言う。

「ボクは君の王子様に、君はボクのお姫様になって、幸せに
いつまでも暮らすのさ」

だけど、それによって犠牲になるモノがウテナにとって余りに
大き過ぎた為、彼女は自分が傷ついてるのも構わず、

物語の最後までお姫様になるのを拒否し、王子様となって、
犠牲になるはずの者を救おうとする…。

つまり、

「女＝姫（守られる者）、男＝王子（守る者）」

であるべき、それが当たり前、という世間での図式に実は、
ざっくりとメスが入っているのだ。
視聴者すらも気付かない程にさり気なく、しかし確実に。

放映当時はまだジェンダーという言葉も普及してなかった。
それもこの作品のスゴさの一つではと思う。

既出ではあるが、摩訶不思議としか言いようのない不思議な
ムードの学園、校舎の造り、所々に意味があるようでないような
演出。破天荒なユーモア。
何より、魅力的なキャラクター達。

それら全てもこの作品の魅力なのは言うまでもない。
