'93年にリリースされた3rdアルバム。
45万枚のヒットとなったシングル『眠れない夜を抱いて』を収録(シングル曲はこれだけ!残りは全部アルバム曲です)。シングル曲が1曲しか入ってなくて手を出すのが不安だと思う方もいらっしゃるかもしれませんが、アルバムのオリジナル曲の完成度が本当に高い!
『あの微笑みを忘れないで』はファンの間では言うまでもない人気曲で、後にベスト盤『ZARD BLEND〜SUN & STONE〜』『ZARD BEST〜Request Memorial〜』にも収録され、また船上ライブ、2004年のライブでも歌われていて、シングル曲並の扱いを受けています。
1曲目から11曲目まで飛ばす曲は1つもないはず。『負けないで』のような必殺の1曲はありませんが、どの曲も歌詞とアレンジが本当に作り込まれてる感じがします。
特にファンの間でも非常に人気の高いバラード『遠い日のNostalgia』は何度聴いても鼻がツーンとします。

40歳という若さでこの世を去られた坂井泉水さんに心からご冥福をお祈りするします。

世間一般的にZARDの最高傑作は次の「揺れる想い」「OH　MY LOVE」あたりなのかもしれないけど、個人的な最高傑作は間違いなくこの「HOLD　ME」！！ZARD＝励ましソング、或いは爽やかポップだと思っている人にもぜひ聴いてみて欲しいアルバム。
シングルになったのはトップを飾る1「眠れない夜を抱いて」のみ。この曲でミュージックステーションに何度か出たこともあり、かなりのヒットとなった。しかし、この素晴らしきシングル曲が浮いてしまわないほどに他の曲が素晴らしいのだ！！2「誰かが待ってる」4「あの微笑を忘れないで」9「愛は眠ってる」10「遠い日のnostalgia」はどれも名曲だし、初期独特のダークな哀愁をもった7「こんなに愛しても」も秀逸！もちろん他の曲も良い曲ばっか。
アルバム全体的には「揺れる想い」の爽やかさと初期のダークさをブレンドさせた感じの作品。
今聴いても決して色あせない名作中の名作！！

フュージョンとハードロックとポップスとのクロスオーヴァーサウンドというのは、欧米におけるジャーニーやフォリナーなどのような非常に高度なロックバンドをもってしても不当に低く評価されることが多いが、このような音楽がもっと注目されて欲しいと私は考える。ZARDというユニットとは、前述のようなクロスオーヴァーサウンドの中で坂井泉水がクリスタルヴォイスを生かしたナチュラルトーンでヴォーカルを取るグループのことである。
本作『HOLD ME』はZARDの初のフルレンスアルバムである。後年のアルバムの影響が大きく本作はやや地味なポジションに甘んじるが、音楽内容はほぼ既に完成されていると言って差し支えないと考える。粒揃いの楽曲が並んでおり、後年の傑作に対しても全く遜色ない。時代を超えて色褪せない作品である。

改めて本作を聴いてみると「どこそこのタイアップ」などでZARDを語ることが馬鹿馬鹿しく感じる。異論はあるかも知れないが、私はZARDを、ステレオコンポーネントで真剣に対面する音楽だと思っている。
