名曲揃いです。
学校帰りや会社帰りに聞くと
優しく満たしてくれる感じがすると思います。

しかし美しいメロディだけに集中するのもいいですが
詞に注目することによって
この作品をより深く理解することができると思います。

1999年作、本当の意味でのポストロックを代表する重要作。このジャケね、正直手に取りにくいとは思います。サブカル大好きの人ならともかく、普通に音楽聴く人からは敬遠されるでしょう。特に女の方には。もしジム･オルークを知らないで、このジャケを見たとしたら、僕は多分、いわゆるパンクとかハードコアだろうと想像したでしょう。いわゆるとわざわざ書いたのは、この盤で鳴らされる音楽もある意味、パンクだったからなんですが、とにかくそういう複雑な意図を持って、このジャケットを採用しているのは間違いありません。

ここで鳴らされる音楽は確かに美しいです。これが本当に激しいディストーションを使用した音響実験を繰り返していたジム･オルークの作品かというくらい美しいです。もちろん、彼がこれ以前にやっていたガスター・デル・ソルのラストアルバムにはこれに近い感触はあったわけですが、それにしてもここまで歌モノでまとめられているのはやはり驚きでした。大体、音響をやる人というのは、そもそもメロディをそんなに書かないというイメージを持っていたのですが、その考えはこれで大きく覆されました。最も実験的なことを続け最もメロディから乖離していた人物が、いわゆるポストロック勢の中でも、最もメロディアスで美しいアルバムを作ってしまっているというパンク精神。それがおそらくこのジャケにも顕れているのではないかと推測します。

ジム・オルークの人気を決定付けた作品のユリイカは、とてもホップで聞きやすい作品だと思います。シカゴ音響系の奇才のは、いろいろなアーティストのプロデュースも手がけており、最近では、ソニック・ユースのメンバーの一員になっています。音的には、音響系とは思えなく、オルークがバリバリギターを弾き歌っています。M7がなんといってもすばらしい。昔のオルークは、今ほどポップではなく今のオルークを批判する人も多いと思います。まあとにかくオルークのいろんな作品を聞くことがよいでしょう！

個人的にこのアルバムは自分がいままで聞いたジムオールクの中でもっとも内省的、内向的な気がしました。ジャケットがどこかノスタルジアを思わせる(笑)
