   当時25歳のスティーヴン・スピルバーグ監督が劇場用映画監督デビュー前に撮ったTVムービーだが、そのあまりのおもしろさゆえに日本では劇場公開され、大ヒット。アヴォリアッツ国際ファンタスティック映画祭でもグランプリを受賞している。
   タンクローリー車の運転手を一切画面に登場させず、あくまでクルマのみが映し出されることが、不気味な恐怖を倍増させていると同時に、顔の見えない現代社会の不安をも反映させてもいる。シンプル・イズ・ベストを地でいく怒涛の展開ののち、荒涼とした空しさを醸し出すラストも印象的。（的田也寸志）

This is the TV movie that put Steven Spielberg on the map, shortly before he made The Sugarland Express. Working from a script by Richard Matheson, the film stars Dennis Weaver as a mild-mannered traveling salesman who unintentionally angers the driver of a semi truck. Suddenly, the truck is not only riding his tail but trying to run him off the road. No matter what he does (pulling over, stopping at a diner, calling the cops), he can't get rid of it. Spielberg makes the wise decision of never showing the driver, even as he cranks the voltage on the film's suspense elements. As a result, the truck itself takes on an air of satanic menace--even a personality of sorts--as it seems to hunt its human prey. Spielberg made a lot out of a little, suggesting just how skilled a storyteller he would become. --Marshall Fine

　ついに発売されるのですねスピルバーグ監督のある意味最高傑作が。
この映画に初めて出会ったのは、日曜洋画劇場(懐かしいなあ)で、確か「ジョーズ」もその番組で始めて見て、今思えばその番組(淀川さんの解説は好きでした。どんな作品も良いところを見つけて誉める。立派です)とスピルバーグ監督が私に映画の面白さを教えてくれたのでしょうね。

　と、映画の話ですが、ストーリーは至極シンプル。車の運転中トラブルに巻き込まれた男の恐怖と悲劇の物語。広大なハイウェイの設定はアメリカならではのものだけど、きっかけは日本だって起こり獲る、些細な追い越しが原因という、シンプル過ぎてかえって恐ろしいというもの。

　そして最後まで男の姿は画面に映らないと言う斬新なスタイルでスピルバーグは一級のサスペンススリラーに仕上げています。
　もう３０年近くも前の作品ですが、今見ても充分に傑作です。どんな名作にも言えることですが、傑作は時代に色褪せることなくいつの時代に見ても面白いものです。

　またDVDですがスペシャルエディションということで何かしらの特典がつくことは間違い無いようです。仕様を見ると音声はdtsもついて進化しているみたいですが、個人的にはモノラル音声もつけてほしいところです。「ジョーズ」にも言えたことですが安易に5.1化するよりも、当時のモノラル音声のほうが画面にしっくりきて、かえって迫力の出る場合が多々在ります。また日本語版もこの作品に関しては付けて欲しいところですね。個人的に懐かしさが味わいたいもので(笑)。過去の名作がこんなプライスでコレクション出来るなんて、本当に映画好きには良い時代になりましたね。

　ただの車好きだった小６の頃に観て、ぶっ飛んだのをとても良く覚えています。車しか出てこない映画なので。大人になってからもちょくちょく観ていましたが、酒で頭がグラグラになるまで友人と飲みながらこの映画を観ていたとき、トラックがガソリンスタンドに寄るシーンを見て友人が「このトラックは空やな」と言い、寒気がしました。空というのは「カラ」、つまり荷物である燃料を積んでいないということです。
　顔の見えないトラック運転手の「仕事中に追い越されてキレた男」というキャラクター以外に、「そもそもトラック運転手ですらなく、都合のいい標的を見つけて殺すためにわざわざゆっくり走っている男。」という連続殺人鬼的なところも浮かんできます。その可能性に気づいてから、また観る目が少し変わりました。
やっぱり名作です。

はっきり言って、スティルバーグ作品の中で一番好きな作品で一番の最高傑作だと思う。
大金を使わなくても、凄い俳優が出演しなくても、観客がハラハラドキドキ
出来る映画作品は、監督次第で作れちゃう作品の中の傑作の一つです。
