巨大彗星が地球に接近。このままでは、あと1年で衝突してしまう。地球側は宇宙船で彗星の軌道修正計画を発動するとともに、万が一に備えて大型地下避難都市を建設するが、そこに避難できるのは100万人までで、しかも50歳以下という年齢制限もある。人々がパニックに陥っていく中、彗星は刻々と地球に近づいていく…。『ピースメーカー』のミミ・レダー監督が、地球滅亡の危機を壮大なスケールで描いた世紀末超大作。
特定の主人公を設けず、オールスター・キャストのグランドホテル形式で複合的なドラマが繰り広げられていくが、いずれも死に直面しての無常感あふれる悲劇の色合いが濃いのが、アメリカ映画としては異色ではある。崩壊スペクタクルの数々も、それに見合った壮烈な出来栄え。（的田也寸志）
