『DIS』以降のルースターズへの評価はかなり分かれるけれど、とり
あえず僕は好き。最高傑作は文句無しにファーストを挙げるが、ず
っと聞いていたい気にさせられるのは後期だな。
大江のヴォーカル、詩、そしてそれに絡む音・・・本当に唯一無二
の世界だと思う。何であんなに少ないボキャブラリーであれだけ独
自の世界を作り上げ、なおかつそれがこんなにもこちらの胸をえぐ
るのか？本当にこの頃の大江は神がかっていたとしか言いようが無
い。特に二曲目の『.I’m Swayin’ In The Air』なんかいつまでも
その世界に浸っていたくなるような名曲。
ただ、後半の元サンハウスの柴山氏が詩を書いた曲は、個人的に今
一つ。柴山独特のマッチョな世界と大江の取り合わせはどうも好き
になれない。このあたりは、かなり個人差が出るんだろうな。
それともう一つ、このアルバムは以前ボーナス・トラック付きで出
ていたが、今出ているのはボーナス・トラック無し。オリジナル仕
様を尊重する気持ちもわかるが、「撃沈魚雷」などの隠れた名曲は
ぜひ手軽に手に入るようにして欲しいものだ。

サイケデリックな感触に変わり始めたアルバム。池畑さんがいなくなってどうなるんだろうと、当時は期待と不安がいりまじりこのアルバムを聴きました。DX-7の音が今聞くととてもチープに聴こえるけれど、大江さんの言葉は以前よりも、心に突き刺さってくるような印象が２０年たった今でもあります。このころから私は大江さんのうたにとても魅かれるようになりました。いまでもたまに、Sad songの一節を口ずさんでしまいます。花田さんの哀愁を帯びたギターが聴けるのもまた、このアルバムの聴き所かとおもいます.....。

初期ルースターズのサウンドは、現在のガレージ・パンク勢のルーツとして揺るぎ無い評価をえているが、日本のロックシーン全体を考えれば、彼らの以前のサウンドと打って変わったこのアルバムは、それ以上に重要な位置にあると言える。収録曲『she made me cry』を代表として、ヴェルヴェット・アンダーグラウンド~テレヴィジョン~フィーリーズという流れと並べて聞けるような作品は、日本において、これ以降も存在していないだろう。大江慎也の危ういヴォーカルと、上記のバンド達と共通した空間を持ったギターサウンドが程良い緊張感を保ち、意志表明、外界への申し立てでなく、むしろそこから切断された位置からの心象風景を綴る歌詞が、危うい浮遊感を増加させている。この後、彼らは編集盤『good dreams』を経て、『ファイ』を発表するが、そこで表現されている「崩壊後の美しさ」に対して、ここで現されているのは、精神が純化していく最中の美しさ（もしくは危うさ）とでも言えるだろう。
