市川崑監督の横溝正史/金田一耕助もののサントラ集で77年に発表された『悪魔の調べ#ミステリー映画の世界』に『女王蜂』と『病院坂の首縊りの家』の曲も増補したもの。田辺信一,大野雄二,村井邦彦らの他大林宣彦!による流麗な音楽が楽しめる。

77年に東宝レコードから発売された同名レコード、金田一耕助映画のサントラ＋カバー音楽集の復刻CD盤。
東宝原盤の「悪魔の手毬唄」「獄門島」はサントラ、角川の「犬神家の一族」松竹「八つ墓村」ATG「本陣殺人事件」はカバー。
「本陣殺人事件」はサントラ未発売で、なんと音楽は、映画監督の大林宣彦によるもの。
これらに加え、CD化に際して、「女王蜂」「病院坂の首縊りの家」のサントラを数曲ずつ追加収録しているので、
当時の金田一映画の音楽を一挙に聴けて、また、各東宝作品はメインの曲のサントラをまとめて聴けるのが特長です。
サントラではないカバー曲も、東宝スタジオオーケストラの演奏により、他の東宝作品風になっているのも面白いです。
