松山千春「承の時代」のハイライトを飾る大ヒットアルバムです。自分自身に対しての葛藤が頂点に達し一気に爆発した時期の作品でありどの楽曲にもその時の心模様が込められている反面、次に迎え撃つ自身との戦い「転の時代」に向けての意気込みがひしひしと伝わってきます。アルバムは自分自身に対する苦悩に耐え切れず思わず泣き出してしまいたい様子を表している「夜」から始まります。「ダーリン」は81年当時流行していた沢田研二の路線を取り入れた松山流ラブソングで多くの女性からの支持を集めた人気曲です。そして、このアルバムのハイライト「時代をこえて」　この時の千春の志しここにあり!!といった内容で「この人生にかけてみよう」「僕の夢よ何処までも届け」と千春の叫びが心に響き渡る名曲です。

　当時のB面に移って「浜辺」 当時のLIVE人気曲で自分の彼女に対する男の気持ちを歌った熱烈なラヴソングで女性ファンの多い中、男性ファンを多く獲得することに成功した名曲です。
佐野博美のサックスも全体の雰囲気を盛り上げています。「夢をのせて」は過去の自分に別れを告げ新たな戦いに挑もうとしている千春の心をダイレクトに伝えている作品でここでは新たな戦いを「朝日」にたとえています。「夏」は「浜辺」の続編といえる作品で千春のレパートリーの中では数少ない夏を題材に取り入れています。この内容が評価されてか81年夏コカコーラCMソングに起用されました。
「限りある命」は「短い人生の中で輝ける時を思いっきり輝きなさい! そして後悔の無い人生を送りなさい! 応援してくれる皆に応えられるよう俺自身も力いっぱい輝いて見せるから」ここでは自分自身にそして応援してくれるファンに対しての誓いと呼べる作品で実際に81年6月28日 日比谷の野音で行われた~時代をこえて~ツアー最終日の時千春が皆に約束したこの言葉が心に残ります。
　このアルバムの発表後6月27．8日には日比谷の野音に於いて時代をこえてツアーFINALを行い迫力ある歌声でファンを魅了しました。そして、この時千春には追い風が吹いていました。

　「長い夜」が5月31日のオリコンチャートから8月2日までの2ヶ月間首位をキープし続け（7/5は近藤真彦が首位獲得）千春自身賭けでもあった「長い夜」は売り上げ86万枚81年年間ランキング5位にランキングされる大ヒット作品となり千春は自分自身との勝負に勝ち次の「転の時代」に進む権利を勝ち取りました。このアルバムは松山千春の長いキャリアの中で最も重要な作品であると同時に丁度転換期を迎えつつあった日本の音楽シーンに衝撃を与えました。オススメは「浜辺」「時代をこえて」「限りある命」です。

私は千春の「起承転結」でいうところの「承」の時代が大好きだ。
繊細な声の「起」の時代も良いが、この「承」時代の千春の「声の
良さ」って、何て聞いていて心地よいのであろうか・・・。
「浪漫」から本作までの３部作が声質・声量ともにベストであると思う。
「とだえた言葉」は至極のラブソング、
「時代をこえて」「限りある命」等のバラード・・・、
声の限りに歌い上げる千春、最高です。

この頃の松山千春のアルバムは常にオリコンの1位を獲得していましたが、その中でも個人的に一番好きなアルバムです。「夏」はコカコーラのＣＭにも使われており、若き日の松山千春の躍動感を感じることができます。

また、千春の曲の特徴として、メロデーを聞いているだけで北海道の広大な大地を思い浮かべます。その中でもタイトルにある「時間をこえて」は特に北海道の果てしなく広い大地をイメージさせます。
