この映画は、本人の意思とは無関係に修道院に入れられ、そこから、あくまで抵抗し、脱出を図る中世の一女性を描いた、非常に重く、暗い映画である。最初は少し我慢が必要かもしれない。しかし、途中から画面に引きずり込まれ、最後に至って非常に良いものを観たという充足感と余韻に浸れる映画であることは間違いない。そしてアンナ・カリーナが際立って美しく撮れていることもこの映画を素晴らしくさせた一因だろう。これが日本で当時公開されなかった理由もわかるが、決してむずかしい映画ではなく、この映画の思想的なものとその暗さが見送らせた原因だろう。
今現在，廃盤のようですが、何度も観たくなる種の強い感動を伴う映画なのでぜひとも再発をお願いしたいと思います。

確かにリウ゛ェットの映画は長い。
特に導入部の観客を引き込む為であろう〈呪文〉が！

長すぎて多分ロードショーなんて無理な作品もあるが（“アウト１”　は１２時間の作品で劇場で観た日本人は作家の蓮賓重彦氏のみ。雑誌『夜想１１号』より。）この作品も例にもれず長い。しかし従来の作品と比べ起承転結がはっきりしており、観客を雲に巻くような演出もない。（そこもたまらなく好きなのであるが。映像の魔法使いと言われるゆえんである。）
なのでリウ゛ェット初心者には鑑賞しやすい作品だと思う。

もともと舞台作品だったそうで、シーンが変わる時は太鼓を叩く音がして〈教えてくれる〉が、たぶんその名残。そしてアンナ・カリーナの演技が素晴らい！ゴダール映画のヒロインも、エキセントリックでそれはそれで良かったが、まさかあの、意味不明な微笑みを浮かべるだけの美人女優と思っていた彼女がこんなスキャンダラスな内容の、苦悩するヒロインになるとは驚きだった。原作はディドロの１７６０年の小説。（こんな本ばっかり出すから、ついに国外追放になった。）作品世界にインスパイアさせたのは監督がリスペクトする溝口健二の『西鶴一代女』だそう。６６年公開時、宗教団体等からクレームが上がり全面的な上映禁止をされてしまい、喝采を浴びたカンヌでしか上映できなかったそうだけど、（映画パンフレットより。）盟友ゴダールの抗議などでやっと６７年に許可が出たと言ういわく付きの名作である。カトリック圏でこのような作品を世に出す勇気にも恐れ入る。ダテにヌーベルバーグを旗揚げした内の一人ではない。気骨のある人だ。こんなふうに上映が阻まれることが多いせいか、“呪われた映画監督”と縁起でもないキャッチフレーズが付いてしまうのよね~。

題材が題材なだけに、重~い暗~い世界です。がしかし、突然華やかな画が挿入されたりもして退屈はしません。とにもかくにも、ジャケットのアンナ・カリーナの不穏な表情を見てください。「身につまされる映画が良い映画」だと言うのなら疑いなく『良い映画』であると断言します。
