80年代のジャパンメタルムーブメントの先駆け的存在であるDEADENDのベスト盤である。メタルといっても彼らの音楽は異色で、叙情たっぷり泣きまくりのyouのギターに、カリスマがかったMorrieのヴォーカルが絡み合う独特の世界観を持っていて、当時非常に話題となっていた。このベストは彼らのメジャーでの３枚のアルバム以外に今や入手困難なインディーズ時代の作品「DEADLINE]からの楽曲なども網羅しておりかなり貴重である。初期の音は少々荒削りだが徐々に彼らの音楽性に深みを帯びていく過程が非常に分かりやすい流れになっている。ミュージシャンの中にもファンが非常に多い彼らの音は今聞いても魅力的で色あせてはいない。

L'arc-en-Cielのニューアルバム「SMILE」を聴いていて、ふと久しぶりに聴いてみたくなったのがDEAD ENDであった。ラルクのhyde自身がフェイバリッットとしてあげているくらい、ラルクに直接の影響を強く与えたグループだ。ジャパメタの文脈で語られることが多いが、その枠にはとうてい収まりきらない完成度の高い音楽性を有する。あえてヘヴィメタルの枠組みで勝負したインディーズの1st「DEAD LINE」から、今のヴィジュアル系の原型とも言えるキャッチーなメロディとドラマティックかつスリリングな演奏が同居するスタジオ最終作「ZERO」。本作は彼らの短い活動期間からまんべんなく選曲されたベストアルバム。日本のロック史上に残る名曲揃いだ。

やっぱりいつ聴いても格好いいですね。リアルタイム世代ではないけど、今聴いても全然古臭くなく、むしろ新鮮さを感じます。聴く度これが本当に20年以上前にデビューしたバンドなのか?と思ってしまいます。全曲格好いいんですが、特に<7>なんかは、格好良すぎて鳥肌が立ちます。後のアーティストに与えた影響も凄いらしく、特にラルクはかなり影響受けてたみたいで、<12>のI WANT YOUR LOVEなんかは初期の彼らが演っても全く違和感なかったしょうね。しかし、どなたか焼き直しなんて言ってましたが、それはとんだ勘違いですね。ラルクには独自の世界観があるし、他のバンドもみんなカラーってのがありますので。少なくともあの時代はみんなポリシー持ってやってたでしょうから。まあとにかく、時代が追い付けなかったカリスマバンドの軌跡を辿るには最適の一枚です。是非聴いてみて下さい。一度ハマると絶対に抜け出せません。断言します。
