皆が「名盤」と声をそろえて言う一枚。いや、マジで。分類したらHipHopなのかもしれないですけど、ライムっていうより詩の朗読に近いビッケの独特の歌がもうたまりません。
「ラップってなんか子供っぽくてやぁね」なんて思っている大人のあなたに、既成概念を変えてくれること間違いない一枚です。

yardという曲。恐らく90年代後半にどこかで耳にしたことがあるはずだ。彼等の作品評価は常に肯定的なものが多いが、正直なところ聞いた人だれもが自身の評価が正しいのかどうなのか悩んだに違いない。良いことは良いのだが、どこが、何が、どう素晴らしいのかを表す言葉が見当たらないからだ。そんな曲であるからこそ何度も聞かれ、何人にも愛重されているのだと思う。評価するには人に聞かせるしかないという曲。~的というレッテル付けの全てを受け入れるフルオープンさは、何一つ隠していない透明さとして極めて奇妙な、不健康なものと見えるだろう。その不健康さに惹かれる。

某音楽誌が選定した邦楽の傑作150枚において、上位50枚にランクインした折り紙つきの名作である。だが私もそうであったように、はじめて聴く人にとっては少々真価を理解しがたいアルバムであるかもしれない。

大して巧くもない口笛に導かれ、唐突に、でもどこか自然流れでビッケのポエトリー・リーディングのようなラップが始まる。ヒップホップに入れるべきなのかも知れないが、その範疇で語るにはあまりに芳醇でフリーキーであり、異質でもある。ジャンルに分類することの無価値さを感じる音楽である。

序盤は、なんというか、映画などで見るムーディーなダンスパーティーを想起させる。賑やかではある。どこかジメッとしていて背後に黒い影を感じる。そして中盤で底抜けな賑やかさが増していき、終盤になるにしたがってなんと聖性を帯びていく。ラスト「ヤード」「Jr.」はまさにアンセムという言葉がぴったりである。きっとこの感触はこのアルバムをおいて他に味わえないだろう。

一癖ある、というよりもこの音楽自体クセの塊であり、慣れないものにとってはハードルが高いだろうし、万人に薦められるシロモノではない。仮に薦めたとしても、薦められた人は真価を理解うちにＣＤを返すであろう。もし聴くなら、それなりの自分の意志を持って何度か聴いてみてほしい。聴くたびに味わいは増すであろう。大袈裟だけど、それ相応の価値はある音楽である。

私事ですが、このアルバムを聴きながら泣いてしまいました。
熱く込み上げてくるんじゃなくて、吹っ切れたような爽快感。
