人気の幅広さという点では、現在本邦ロック・バンドでダントツのシャ乱Q。その秘密は今様GSサウンドにありそうだ。取っつきやすいメロディとサウンドは、60年代中期にリヴァプール・サウンドを“和風”にアレンジして一世を風靡したあれこれのバンドを思い起こさせる。それもゾンビーズあるいはラスカルズあたりをナニしたシブメ系、そしてときにバブルガム系。当時は本流になり得なかったラインが、今やカラオケ人気に沸いているというのも時代の移り変わりか。ということはわが国の一般大衆の耳がようやく30年前の米国一般大衆レベルに到達したという……ヤレヤレ。もちろん、このバンドには何の罪もない。それどころか、決して軽くはないノリなのにすんなりと耳に入り、歌いたくさせるというところにこのバンドの並々ならぬ底力を感じる。ご存じ(7)が典型だろう。ロックンロールをここまで消化して、平成の日本ポップスに造りあげた思いきりの良さには“降参”と言うしかないのだ。 (平原康司) --- 1999年01月号
