　カール・セーガンの『COSMOS』で深遠なる宇宙のテーマ的な扱いを受け、番組を見ていた当初、私はこの番組のために作られた楽曲なのかと勘違いしてしまったほどです。『COSMOS』の1st Editionでは、このアルバムからかなりの楽曲が引用されていますが、それほどこのアルバムは視覚的にあふれた作品なのです。しかし、アルバム全体を通して聴くと、コンセプトの一部である事に気づかされるでしょう。まるで一篇の交響詩でも聞いているようです。
　YESのジョン・アンダーソンとのコラボレーションもすばらしく、作曲はヴァンゲリス、作詞がジョン（いかにも彼らしい詩だ）のコンビによります。当時リック・ウェイクマンが脱退した際にグループに加入するように依頼されたのもうなずけます。“名声か自由か？”の選択にヴァンゲリスは自由を選びました（皮肉にもこのコラボレーションはそのお蔭で実現したというわけ）。
　現在このアルバムと『反射率0.39』はウィンダム・ヒルが版権を所有していたために、輸入盤はWindham Hillのクレジットが入っています。個人的には、そんな版権ではなく、彼には同レーベルとレコード契約を交わしてもらって、ピアノソロのアルバムを制作してもらいたいなぁと思います（ジョンは一枚リリースしてますしね）。

　このアルバムは、テレビシリーズ「コスモス」のサントラとして
有名なアルバムです。ヴァンゲリスの存在を知ったのも、
この番組であるが、アルバムだけを聴くと、思春期の子供ながら、
地獄の恐ろしさ・天国の安らぎを感じさせるサウンドの迫力を実感した。
　今、ヴァンゲリスを知っている人は多くは、2002 ワールドカップの

アンセムに使われたことで知っている方が多いと思います。
この機会に、彼の過去の作品を鑑賞されることをお勧めします。

あなたが何かしらヴァンゲリス好きならば、このアルバムは気に入るはずだ。ヴァンゲリスの早期の作品でありながら、ヴァンゲリスの全ての曲のスタイルが詰め込まれている。
天国と地獄パート１とソー・ロング・アゴー,ソー・クリアーと天国と地獄パート２だけなのだが、実は各パート内で曲がいくつかに分かれている。
合唱隊が入ったシンフォニックな部分、プログレ的な部分、クラシカルな部分、宗教的な部分、アヴァンギャルドな部分、民族的な部分、瞑想的な部分など全てのスタイルが詰め込まれている。ヴァンゲリス好きの人ならだれでも好きになれるはずだ。
