   65年、サンフランシスコで結成されたジェファーソン・エアプレインは、74年からジェファーソン・スターシップを名乗り、85年には再びバンド名を変え、スターシップとしてこの第1弾作品を発表した。
   エレクトロニック・サウンドを取りいれた、さわやかでキレのあるポップなロックと、グレイスとミッキーのツイン・ヴォーカルの妙が実に親しみやすく、それまで以上に広く支持されることとなった。

それまでのキャリアに拘らず、バンドとしてのポテンシャルを時代（85年リリース）に合わせて制作された彼らの最高傑作だろう。
バンド名に「ジェファーソン」が付いた頃とは全く別の、西海岸系実力派バンドの作品として聴けば、80年代を代表する名盤だ。
彼らの真骨頂であるストレートで爽快なロックチューン“1”のＰＶは最高。当時のＭＴＶで大笑いしながら見たのを思い出す。
ミッキー・トーマスのヴォーカルが切なくて印象的なパワーバラードの名曲“2”と合わせて、大ヒットを記録。
80'sミディアムテンポのポップロックとして典型的な“7”、“3~6”で見せるいずれもシングルカットできそうなレベルの高いロックの連続で、
全編に80'sサウンドの懐かしさが漂っている。
同じサンフランシスコ系バンドのヒューイ・ルイス＆ザ・ニュース『Fore』やMr.ミスターの『Welcome　To　The Realworld』と共に、避けられない作品。
実力のある人達が本気で「売り」に走ると、こんなに素晴らしい作品を作ってしまうという好例だ。
因みに、87年リリースの希代の名曲「愛は止まらない」のアレンジは本作の延長線上であり、その意味でも重要な作品だろう。

80年代のヒット曲集みたいな企画では必ず登場する80年代屈指の名曲シスコはロック・シティーとセーラを含むスターシップの大ヒット作品です。この時代のスターシップの最大の魅力は、ミッキートーマスの爽やかなハイトーンヴォーカルとアメリカを代表する女性ヴォーカリストのグレーススリックの二人のヴォーカリストを有することでしょう。とにかくこの二人息ピッタリ相性ピッタリで、ソロを交互にとるもよし、混声もよしでまさに理想の組み合わせだと思います。
ぜひこのアルバムを聴いて、80年代の息吹を感じてみてください。

このバンドも、２度、バンド名を変更してるのだが、
この「スターシップ」に変わってから出した、
このアルバムで、初の大ヒットとなったのだった。
その前兆的２つの名曲があり、オープニングを飾る
「シスコはロックシティ」でまず全米No１、
続いて出した2「セーラ」も全米No１になり、
この２曲は後にちょくちょくラジオなので聞かれるように
なったり、現在発売されている、オムニバスアルバムの中にも
主に８０年代代表曲として収録されるまでになるほどなのだ。
このバンドは、Voが男女２人いて、２人ともパワフルな声量の
持ち主であり、声の相性も抜群である。
しかし、アメリカ人の男性Voってのは
キーが高いので、女性とのハモリも素晴らしい。
基本は８０年代特有のエレクトリックな感じを強調した
ロックサウンドで、聞き所のツボを上手い具合に料理した、
大傑作である。
まぁ、大ヒットしたんですから、当たり前ですが。
とにかく、８０年代のＰＯＰ＆ROCK系の代表的アルバムなので
機会があれば是非聴いてもらいたい。
