おそらくケルト民謡のながれでもっとも成功しているのは、
エンヤ（昨年末にアルバムをだしたような）だが、アイリ
ッシュ・ケルト音楽でもっとも歴史の長いプロのグループ
はこのチーフタンズであろう。

　彼らをはじめて知ったのは、高校三年のときであるから、
今から１０年前だとおもう。このアルバムにはイギリスの
有名なアーティスト、たとえば、スティングであったり、
ローリングストーンズであったりと、メンバーはすごい。
メディアにおける成功ならば、ローリングストーンズや、
スティングなのかもしれないが、チーフタンズはアイリ
ッシュ・ケルトの伝統的な楽器で、伝統的な音楽の枠内で
鳥肌の立つような上質の音楽を半世紀以上も奏でてきたの
である。

　ナチュラルなサウンドとアイリッシュ楽器の哀愁、彼ら
の年輪、すべてが産業音楽などを凌駕するものだと僕は思
うのです。

　いわゆるエスニック、フォーク・トラッドというのは、
決まりきった音楽ばかりを指し示すものかのように感じる
が、自分たちの機嫌というか、民俗の歴史、血の歴史を音
楽によって語り継ぐような、音楽というのは、それだけで
人の耳にのこるものなのでしょう。

　このアルバムを知ったのは、当時たまたま見ていたBSの
番組で、彼らのことを取り上げていて、感動したからに過
ぎないが、偶然でこれだけすばらしい音楽と出会えたこと
を私は、幸福に思います。

１１年前のアルバムですが、素晴らしい一語。なんでこんな凄いメンバーとコラボレーションができるのか。それは、チーフタンズが世界のトップミュージシャンから敬意を払われているからでしょう。１３曲のすべてが最高のできで、なんとも言えぬ世界を醸し出しています。アイルランドの伝統音楽とロックの相性がこんなにいいとは。ゲストのすべてがこのコラボレーションに喜びを感じているような気がします。チーフタンズのフアンでない人も、知らないと人にもこのアルバムを自信を持って推奨します。新しい魅力的な音楽との出会いを感じるはずです。私の一番の気に入りはライ、クーダーとのcoast of malbar。カリプソ風のアレンジとライのギター演奏、そして、独特の歌唱がなんともいえぬ甘い哀感にあふれた魅力的な世界をつくっています。このアルバムを聴くとき、一通り聞いた後、この曲だけをもう一度聴いてしまいます。それくらい好きな曲です。
