Alice Cooperのバックバンドでもある凄腕ミュージシャンらを従え、73年末にニューヨークで録音された、個人名義としては初のライブ盤。当時半ば伝説化していたLou Reedが世間に姿を現した記念碑的ライブでもあった。
オリジナルは全5曲で、このリマスター盤から34が加えられている。今回既発の同タイトルＣＤからも飛躍的に音質が向上している（White Light/White Heatでこんなにベースが鳴っていたとは初めて知った）。難を言えば、追加された2曲がオリジナル収録曲に較べると全体的演奏レベルが少し劣るような気がする。
因みに私はこのアルバムからリアルタイムでLou Reedを聴き始めたのだが、その後遡ってVelvet Undergroundを聴き、なんてヘタくそなバンドだと思った。確かに今聴いても上手い人たちに支えられたライブである。だが振り返ってみると、本作とその姉妹作にあたるLou Reed Liveは彼のステージキャリアの中でも貴重なものと思える。

1973年12月21日ニューヨークでのライブ録音。ルー・リードには申し訳ないが、バック・バンドが凄い！特にスティーヴ・ハンターとディック・ワグナーのギターは必聴！2人ともデトロイトで活動していたセッション・ギタリストで、ハンターはミッチ・ライダーなどのバック・バンド、ワグナーはフロストというローカル・バンドにいたのだが、このルー・リードとの仕事で一気に注目されるようになったのだ。(あくまでセッション・ギタリストとしてだが)
ルー・リード登場前の長い「イントロ」からギター弾きまくり。右チャンネルでソロを弾いているのがハンター、左がワグナーと思われる。「イントロ」の作曲がハンターなのと、ワグナーのインタビューがヒント。この時期はレスポールTVスペシャル、カスタマイズした100ワットのマーシャル、エコープレックス、MXRのフェイザーを使用していたと語っているからだが確証は無い。このあと長年のパートーナーとなる2人は、よく似た音色とフレーズですでに息もぴったり。ブルースをベースにしているが華麗で緊張感あるソロを交互に聴かせてくれる。
客もプレスもバック・バンドと2人のギタリストを賞賛したため、ルー・リードはツアー中からそれが気に入らなかったようだ。このアルバムが好評で、同じコンサートを収録した続編「ルー・リード・ライブ」もリリースされることになるのだが、ルー・リード本人はこの2枚が好きではないらしい。
ルー・リードに嫌われたバック・バンドは、当時ルー・リードとアリス・クーパーのプロデュースをしていたボブ・エズリンのコネで、そのままアリス・クーパーのバックに横すべりすることになる。

１７歳から１９歳くらいまでの僕は日本のルー・リードになるつもりだったのに、なぜか今はしがないシステム屋で、どこでどう道を間違えたのかよくわからないのだけれど、しかしこのアルバムと続編の“ルー・リードライブ”のカッコよさといったらない。
たまらん。
きっと君も２１世紀のルー・リードになりたいと思うよ。
絶対なれないけど。
保障する。

とにかくルー・リードと言えば“ベルリン”と“トランスフォーマー”がまずでるけれど、そのベルベッドやソロ３枚の次はこの“ロックンロールアニマル”と続編“ルー・リードライブ”をじっくり聴いて彼への思いや彼の方法論、アプローチを知ってほしい。
