とかく評判悪い。評論家筋から見られるネガティブ論調。しまいにゃ本人迄その存在を否定する様な発言…。ルーの親父にとって辛い時期の忘れたい過去なんでしょう。でもね、誰が何と云おうとこのアルバムは素晴らしい!!どこから斬っても美メロの原石です。この後彼はNY裏町の大詩人となりますが…深いテーマやら荘厳なコンセプトなんて糞くらえですよ。ひたすら心地よい小粋な作品集ですが、ココにこそ真のルーリードが存在するのです。非凡なるメロディメーカー&ロックンローラーとしての姿が…。

ベルベット解散後のアルバムであり、珠玉の作品集となっている。トランスフォーマー等の（セールス的に）派手なアルバムではないが、恐らくルーの最も真骨頂が発揮されたアルバムだと思う。特に楽曲「リサセッズ」はルーの最高傑作であり、しんみりした雰囲気の中に希望の光明が見えてくるような曲である。このような曲がこのアルバムにはぎっちり詰められており、まさにキャロルキングのつづれおりのような玉手箱のような作品集である。ルーリードファン、いや音楽ファンにとってはこのアルバムと「ルーリード、ライブインイタリー」は外す事の出来ない必須アイテムである。

　1972年6月発表のルー・リードのソロ・デビュー・アルバムです。1970年8月のヴェルヴェッツ脱退後、ルー・リードは父親の事務所でタイピストとして働くなどして、作曲はしていなかったそうです。このため、ここの10曲のうち8曲がヴェルヴェッツ時代に書かれお蔵入りした曲の再演です（このお蔵入りした曲は"VU", "Another View", "Peel Slowly And See", "Loaded (fully loaded edition)"などで聴くことが出来ます）。
　ヴェルヴェッツのラスト・アルバム"Loaded"がポップすぎると批判されたと聞いたことがありますが、そうしたことを踏まえてでしょうか、多くの曲はヴェルヴェッツ時代の録音よりもずっとタイトでシンプルなアレンジになっています。冷たく鋭利な感じがブリティッシュ・ロック風だなと思ってきましたが、実際にロンドン録音でバックにリック・ウェイクマンやスティーヴ・ハウといったYESのメンバーが参加していることをこの解説で初めて知りました（なるほど！）。
　ルー自身は当時のインタビューで「ニューヨークから出て全てのものとの関係を断ち切って新しいスタートを切りたかった」「ロンドンへ移住しようかとさえ考えている」とコメントしています。ヴェルヴェッツ時代のトラブルのトラウマもあったでしょうし、否定することで過去を乗り越えようとしたのかもしれません（ジョン・レノンが「ジョンの魂」でそうしたように）。
　ところで。他のレビュアーは褒めていますが、歌がいつも以上に不安定ですし、（簡単なデモしか残っていない曲は別にして）全てヴェルヴェッツ時代の録音の方がずっといいので、僕はお世辞にもよいアルバムとは思いません。ルー・リードには先に聴くべき作品が10枚ぐらいはあると思います。
