日本のレコード会社の作る、愛のないベスト盤にウンザリしてきたが、これは例外的な傑作。シングル盤のジャケ写がカラーで紹介されており、リリース年月もきちんと記載、さらにＲ＆Ｂ評論でも知られる鈴木啓之氏が詳細な解説を付けている。選曲も演歌色の濃い「噂の女」からソウルフルな「さようならの彼方へ」まで偏りない。小林さんの歌う「イエスタデイ・ワンス・モア」は残念ながら「おば歌謡」に収録されなかったので次回に期待したい。

「こおおおおううべええー」曲が始まっていきなり、こう歌われます。
唐突に何の説明もなく「神戸」。そしてこう続きます「神戸、泣いてどうなるのか」。素晴らしい出だしです。不謹慎かもしれませんが、「がんばろう、神戸」の1万倍、言葉の「パワー」があります。

　そしてこう続きます。「捨てられた我身がみじめになるだけ」。後半ではこんなフレーズも。「誰かうまい嘘のつける相手捜すのよ」。ズバリ「愚かな女」です。

　「愚か」さから生まれる湿りきった力。「愚か」さを隠さない潔さ。
「愚か」さを正面から蔑む残酷さ。　２１世紀人が忘れてしまっている、ストレートな「陰湿さ」を思い出させてくれます。

　そして、前川清。湿度の高い情念のこもった声を、不器用に叫び、震わせる。過剰な情念、過剰な叫び、過剰な震え。決してテクニックで小手先に逃げない「愚か」さです。

まずはじっくり、このジャケットを見て欲しい。
デザイナーや制作スタッフの、クールファイブへの熱い思い入れが感じ取れるのではないだろうか（実際、詳細な解説もついている）。

シングルだけで50枚以上も出ているため（南州太郎似の、小林さんがソロを取る「イエスタディ・ワンス・モア」を含む）、１枚ものベストだけではさすがにその全貌まで迫ることは不可能なわけだが、筒美京平作曲のバリー・ホワイト調歌謡「さようならの彼方へ」、歌謡界の≪夜のワーグナー≫・藤本卓也作曲「愛の旅路を」ほか、名曲揃いである。

もしあなたが未体験なら、まずは聴いてみて欲しい。そして、前川清の抑制をきかせつつも熱いヴォーカル、まさにクールなコーラスワーク、そしてタイトかつゴージャスなバックトラック、これらが滋養強壮剤の如く渾然一体となって溶け込んだ≪クールファイブ・ワールド≫に、ノックアウトされるべきである。
