冨田勲だなんて,失礼な言い方だけど,山田洋次監督にしては思い切った人選だと思う。シンセの厚塗りは意外や控え目。パンフルート(たぶん)の響きが郷愁を誘う主題曲(17)をはじめ,アコースティックな音を前面に押し出している。定価も思い切って1000円だ。

冨田勲さんというと、やはりシンセサイザーの大家というイメージが強いですが、もちろん、優れた作曲家としてもよく知られています。特に、この「学校」では、哀愁漂うテーマ曲が映画の感動をさらにもり立て、印象に残るものでした。

山田洋次さんの監督作品と云うことで、あまり曲数は多くないのですが、それがかえって心に残る音楽を際立たせています。お値段も手ごろですし、ぜひ手に取って聴いていただきたいアルバムです。

　曲調がまさにウィンダム・ヒル。特にオープニング曲など氏の名前を聞かされないで聴いたら、ウィンダム・ヒルの誰かの曲だと勘違いしてしまいそうなほど牧歌的で優しいメロディ。ライナーには監督のコメントがついていて、自分の作品の試写で初めて泣いてしまったそうです。その理由が音楽にあったとか。確かにこの曲を聴くと映画のシーンが、そして過ぎ去った自分の思い出が浮かんでくるようです。

シンセサイザーというとヴァンゲリスを思い浮かべる人もいると思いますが、日本には冨田勲という巨匠がいること忘れていてはいけません。「火の鳥」の様なダイナミックな曲も創ると思ったら、この「学校」の様な叙情的な曲も創るのですね。映像と物語と完全に溶け込んだ音楽でした、当時映画館で鑑賞後にこれこそ映画音楽だと思ったもんです。特に映画のオープニング、クマちゃん（西田敏行）が校長に呼ばれ意見した後、昼部の通常の生徒が帰り正門に外灯の明かりが映えるシーンにタイトルとメインタイトルのサビの部分が重なるシーン（何故かそのシーンで泣いてしまうんです）、音楽の尺と映像の尺がばっちり合ってますね絶妙のタイミングで。
優しい気持ちになった時に聴くと良いですよ。映画音楽とではなく独立した音楽としても一級品です。
