トスカニーニとしばしば比較されるフルトヴェングラーは、その強烈な個性のゆえに、ショパン同様後継者を持たなかった。一方のトスカニーニは、現在活躍するすべての指揮者の源ともいえる。トスカニーニのモットーは「楽譜に忠実に」ということ。もっとも、この「楽譜に忠実」ということほど難しいことはないだろうが。

でもこの演奏を聴いてみると、彼のモットーはともかく、彼もまたフルトヴェングラーの同時代人だったことがハッキリわかる。ここにはフルトヴェングラーと共通の気迫があるし、音のバランスだとか技術などを最優先とはしない、演奏に対する強い情熱が感じられる。

ロッシーニのクレシェンドは有名だが、これがどんなに凄いかは、これを実際に聴いた者でないとわからないだろう。こんな演奏を求められた楽団員たちに同情したくなるくらい。実力を発揮するのではなく、実力以上の演奏が求められている。この態度もまたフルトヴェングラーと同じ。

私はさっき、現在活躍する指揮者は皆トスカニーニの後継者だと書いたが、でも現在これだけ熱気のある演奏を聴かせてくれる指揮者がどれだけいるだろう？　時間も労力も充分に使える現在の演奏が、生きるだけで困難だった頃につくられた音楽に匹敵しないというのは、どういうことか？　音楽は瞬間を相手にする芸術であり、誰かさんの言葉ではないが「芸術は爆発だ」という根本的な精神が軽んじられてしまったのだろうか？　だから私のように、モノラルを手放せない人間も出てくるんでしょうネ。
