このCDはルービンシュタインが88歳の時に録音したもの。ルービンシュタインは何回か皇帝を録音しているが、この録音が一番素晴らしい。この曲の雄大さとルービンシュタインのピアノとバレンボイム指揮によるオーケストラが見事にマッチしていてまさに皇帝の中の皇帝です。

このピアノ協奏曲５番については他の人の演奏した物も少し聞いたことがあるが、
この演奏はかなりゆっくりである気がした。まさに雄大としかいえない第一楽章、
優しさを凝縮したような第二楽章。そして広がりを持つ第三楽章。

クラシックに詳しくない自分でも感動し、かなり何度も聞いてしまった。ゆっく
りな演奏は、ついていきやすく、聞きやすかった。ピアノ・ソナタ第１８番も、
ちょっとめだたなかったが入っている。

これはクラシックに詳しくないものの戯言であるが、この音楽には
自分の内なる世界へ突入させる何かがあるような気がする。それはへこん
でいるとき、自分を鼓舞するとき、何かどうしてもやらなくてはいけないこと
があるときには有効であるのだが、外部の世界への注意力がある意味で凍結され
てしまうきがする。

ベートーヴェンの、交響曲にも匹敵する大作なのだが、今ひとつしっくり来る演奏がなかった。あるときたまたま手にとったのがこのCD。とにかくすばらしいの一言につきる。全体にゆったり目のテンポが、この曲の重厚な造りを隅々まで伝える。一つ一つの音、音符の”粒が立って”いる。第３楽章には大きなテンポの変化があるが、それが聴き手の感動の動悸そのままのように自然だ。指揮・伴奏の厚みもすばらしい。
この曲で、「いまひとつしっくりこない」と思っている方、とにかく聴いてみて下さい。間違いなくベスト盤になりますよ。
