ショパンのバラード4曲はドラマティックで緊迫感に富む作品だが、今回のスタジオ録音に聴くキーシンの演奏は、必要以上に突き詰めたあるいは自分を追いこんでいるような深刻な印象がやや強い。その後「子守歌」での安らいだ表情にはホッとするが……。


内容 (「CDジャーナル・レビュー」より)

4曲を続けて聴き通すのはちょっとつらいよね、と思わせるほどに、ショパンの天才が凝縮された作品形式、バラード。そう感じさせるのはショパンのせいばかりではなさそうだ。“客入りの方が弾きやすい”というキーシン好みのライヴでなしに、スタジオ録音。そのあたりも絡んでか、全体(とりわけバラード)を通してクールな演奏の上に作曲者とピアニスト、二人の天才が対峙している図式。CD全体の流れの中では結びのスケルツォ(第4番)の薄陽の明るさが救いとなる。トニー・フォークナーの録音バランスが、マイクロフォンの遠近とは別の意味での距離感(疎遠感?)を演出してしまっているようで、これが演奏家やプロデューサーが求めていたサウンドであるのかどうか、余計な心配をしてしまう。テクニカルにも安定してきた20bitデジタルによるピアノ録音、おまけにキーシンひさびさのショパンということで、期待ばかりが必要以上に膨らんでしまったのかもしれない。 (田中成和) --- 1999年07月号

「難しいところを何気なく弾きこなし，簡単に見えるところに細心の注意を払う」。キーシンの演奏を聴いているといつもそう感じます。奇を衒わずに自然な楽譜の解釈。テンポが遅くそれほど難しいとも思えないのに出だしの数小節が曲の中で最も難しいといわれる「舟歌」。ゆったりとした中に自然とテンポの揺れを組み込ませ，聴く人を心地よくさせる「舟歌」の演奏がこのCDの中で一番気に入っています。

このバラードはツィメルマン版にもひけを取らない。
永く人々に愛されるショパンバラードとなるでしょう。
是非聴いてみてください。
ピアノとショパンとピアニストそれぞれの限界を超えた時に生まれた
奇跡のような美しきバラード。

このCDのスケルツォ第４番、特に中間部が好き。
やわらかくて深い音、少しゆっくり目のメロディーに誘われて
心が大空を散歩してる気分。
そして初めの主題に戻ったとき、キラキラの高音部はまるでミッヒャルエンデの「モモ」に出てくる「時間の花」みたい。
一瞬一瞬この上ない美しさで咲く花。
