協奏曲以外はすべてホロヴィッツが70歳代も後半の演奏(ソナタは80年のライブ録音)。それにも関わらず圧倒的なテクニック、音！この頃はまだまだ無類のヴィルトゥオーゾぶりを遺憾なく発揮していたことがよく分かる豪壮な演奏である。またそれを追認するかのように聴衆の熱狂も物凄く、ホロヴィッツのリサイタルの様子も垣間見させてくれる。しかし晩年のホロヴィッツは同時に、楽譜にとらわれない自在な表現で深い瞑想的な詩情も感じさせてくれる。

1951年録音の協奏曲は今更説明無用の超名演。録音バランスのせいでオケがやや引っ込み気味なので、例えば終楽章コーダのような場面で曲のもたらす感動がやや薄いのが残念だが、独奏に限って言えばまさに空前絶後、桁外れの表現力である。ただ最近ではもうちょっと音質の改善された盤があるとのこと。また作曲者容認のカットをいくつか行っている。

ソナタ2番とその他の小品の音質は非常に良くて、ホロヴィッツの魅力を近くに感じることが出来る。
特にソナタ2番を爆発的なエネルギーで弾いているホロヴィッツは凄く、私は一気にこの曲が好きになった。

最高に有名なP協3番は音質が悪い。
情熱的かつ軽快に弾くホロヴィッツの様子は伝わってくるが、音質の悪さには残念である。

１９５１年録音。オーケストラの音の劣化は、隠せないが、ピアノの音は、明瞭。

冒頭の優雅な旋律が無表情に弾き始められたときには、正直言って、あまり大したことはないと思った。しかし、その旋律の反復に入ったときに、びっくりした。右手の旋律は、アダージョ風で無表情なままなのに対し、左手の分散和音の進行が、プレスト風に、力強く、明瞭に演奏されていたからだ。初めて聴いたホロヴィッツの演奏だった。斬新だった。

第３楽章のフィナーレの独奏部分が、最大の聴きどころであり、ホロヴィッツの特徴が良く出ている部分だ。例えば、『展覧会の絵』の最終章である「凱旋門」のような、和音進行の独特のレトリックだ。
曲全体のイメージをつかみたい方には、ベルマンの演奏をお勧めしたい。
