チャイコフスキー ピアノ協奏曲 第1番：
この大人気曲にはアルゲリッチ/コンドラシンや
リヒテル/カラヤン盤といった名盤が多いのですが、それらを遙かに凌ぐ歴史的録音です。
若きホロヴィッツが駿馬の如く猛スピードでどこまでも邁進してゆくのに対し、
トスカニーニのタクトも一切乱れることなく高速で淡々と振られ続けてゆきます。
特に第1/3楽章において、お互い気高く喧嘩をしているように聴こえても、
実はトスカニーニが何事にも動じることなくサラリと流しているようにも感じられます。
終始息詰まるスリリングな演奏とはまさにこの演奏のことで、
古めかしい録音状態がなおさら当時の演奏シーンの想像力をかき立ててくれます。

ムソルグスキー 展覧会の絵：
展覧会の絵というよりも、むしろある種の戦争映画でも観ているかのような錯覚に
陥ります。それほどまでに圧倒的な表現力の豊かさとホロヴィッツの存在感に驚きます。

もしこのCDが状態の良いステレオ録音だったら…と想像するだけで背筋がゾクゾクしてしまいます。

トスカニーニのCDという扱いですが、まさにホロヴィッツ全盛期の超人技を聴くためのCDです。特に展覧会の絵は47年スタジオ版もありますが、この51年ライブ版のほうがノイズも少なく圧倒的な演奏になっています。キエフの大門のフィナーレはまさに１０本の指で弾いているとは思えないと称された大迫力演奏。チャイコフスキーも演奏終了を待ちきれず拍手喝采する聴衆が華を添えています。
