　ヴァントとベルリン・フィルによるブルックナー・シリーズの最初のものであり、結果的には代表作になったのではないか。

　演奏内容はとにかく圧倒的である。ベルリン・フィルの演奏力とヴァントの資質がうまく結合した結果、密度の高い緊張感のある第五が生まれたのだ。重厚だが鈍重にならずスムーズだし、華麗さと深みを合わせ持っている。他の第五の演奏とは別次元の趣がある。
　録音もこのシリーズでは第八に次いで優秀なので、お薦めしたい。

~この演奏から分かることは、ベルリンフィルが驚くほど緊張していることである。いや、むしろ恐ろしいほど集中しているというべきだろうか。明らかにカラヤンやアバドの下でのベルリンフィルではない。もはや別のオーケストラになったといってもいい。この緊張感が、演奏にストレートに反映している。

ヴァントは、かつてこう言ったことがある。「ブルック~~ナーの『第５』と『第９』は、世評、世間というものに完全に背を向けている。これほどの例は彼にしてもめずらしい」と。

ブルックナーの生きていた当時、交響曲のみならず、音楽の創作というものは、常に聴衆と「一体」であった。彼には聴衆を無視する「権利」は存在しなかった。だからこそ、実際には宗教音楽とは無縁のはずの交響曲という様式で書いた作~~品でさえ、「ブルックナーらしくない」として改訂を余儀なくされたのである。「自身の作品に懐疑的になり」云々という記述をよく見かけるが、そうではない。いわば彼は「周囲から抑圧された交響曲作家」なのである。そして、そのような「抑圧」からまるで逃れるように書いたのが、（「独白的」と言ってもよい）この『第５』であった（シャルク版は改訂版とい~~うよりも完全な改悪版だ）。

私には、このディスクから感じられる緊張感と、『第５』の独白的な作品の性格とが、最終的に見事に調和しているように思われる。

ヨッフムのブルックナーをはじめとする、あまりにも宗教的なものを求める人には全く向かない。ああいう演奏は交響曲作家としてのブルックナーの意図を全く無視している。私も個人的に１７、８~~年くらい、この『第５』のスコアを研究してきた末の結論だ。

それから、いわゆる「怒濤のクライマックス」を期待する人にもおすすめできない。ヴァントが目指したものは、あくまでも違和感のない、流れるような音楽である。「それは、ただ流れていた。これが音楽だ！」。ヴァントが好んで口にした、トスカニーニにまつわるエピソードからも、このことは明~~白である。

ブルックナー自身はこの『第５』を評して、「対位法による書法の傑作」と言っていた。宗教的なムードとは無縁の、まさに交響曲作家としての姿が伺える言葉である。この言葉をはっきりと理解できるのは、今のところ、私にとってはヴァントの演奏からだけである。~

96年にベルリンで録音されたライブアルバムです。ブルックナーの５番といえば、ブルックナーの交響曲の中でも最も重厚感にあふれた大作です。

ブルックナー解釈で定評のあったヴァントは、ここでもスコアに忠実に、ベルリンフィルの能力を最大限に引き出し、重量感に富んだ演奏を聴かせてくれます。とりわけ、燃え上がるような第一、四楽章が聴き応えがあるのですが、中でもヴァントのブルックナー解釈が威力を発揮するのは、複雑に書かれたフィナーレ部分で、各楽器がからみあいながら、爆発的なクライマックスを迎えます。
ブルックナーの５番の名演といってよいアルバムであり、ブルックナーファンにはお奨めの１枚です。
