毎回、神秘的な題材をテーマに置き、コンセプトアルバムを創り続けていたアランパーソンズプロジェクト。
アイインザスカイは、宇宙を題材にしたアルバムです。
このアルバムのリリース当時は、プロモーションビデオが流行し始めた頃で、映像映えする音楽、何処を切ってもシングルカットできそうな、商業的なアルバムが売れていた時代でした。しかし、アイインザスカイは、コンセプトアルバムという形をとっていたため、曲の善し悪しに関わらず、シングルカットに向く曲は1,2曲、しかもシングルカットされたタイトル曲のアイインザスカイはプロモーションヴィデオもありませんでした。
しかしアルバム、シングル共々、大ヒット。
根っからの職人集団だった彼らは、不完全な演奏を嫌い、当時ライブも行っていませんでした。
そんな状況を思い返してみると、当時の彼らには扱っているテーマ性も相まって、かなりカリスマ性があったようです。
楽曲の性格によって、ヴォーカルを変えるばかりではなく、クラシック、ロック、ポップ、プログレッシブの要素を融合させていく彼らの音楽は今もなお高い芸術性を持って輝いています。
余談ですが、アランパーソンズは、当時、何かのインタビューで、エリックウルフソンの作曲した曲を、僕がひっくり返すとすごくいい曲になるんだ、みたいなことを言っていました。
上記した通り、色々なテイストを持つ楽曲が収録されたコンセプトアルバムになっていますので、すべての曲がお勧めです。

数あるアランパーソンズプロジェクトの中でも最高傑作と思っています。メロディラインが美しい。もう２０年も前の作品となってしまいましたが、今聞いてもいい。

後期のビートルズを始め、ピンク・フロイドの「狂気」、
ポール・マッカートニー＆ウィングスなどの
アルバム製作において、プロデュース＆エンジニア
として名を馳せた天才アラン・パーソンズが、
ソングライターのエリック・ウルフソンと
伝説の推理小説家「エドガー・アラン・ポー」
の世界を題材にしたコンセプトアルバムを作るという事から
始まった、偉大なるプロジェクトチームが結成されたのが’７５年。
そして、そのデビューアルバム『怪奇と幻想の物語』
がいきなり、大ヒットし、グラミー賞に
ノミネートされ、その後も、数枚のアルバムを発表し、
その度に世界のメディア、リスナーの
喝采を浴びる事となるがこのアランの持ち味と言うのは、
綿密に研究し、構成された、上質のクリエイティブなサウンドにある。
英国出身と言うこともあり、プログレッシブに近い感じは受けるが
結成当時は、クラシカルなイメージで、
構成されていた音楽が、’８０年に入ってから
その流れと言うのか、ややポップよりに移る事となる。
ソングライターもいるので、ヴォーカル入りの曲もあるが、
インストの曲はまさに、アランの独壇場となって、
不思議な、現在で言うならば癒し系的なサウンドを醸し出す。
そして、私が個人的に好きなアルバムがこれで、
オープニングのインスト曲から
もうその幻想空間に導かれ、２曲目に続くアランの
世界を顔パスの如く、引き入れてくれる。
ちなみに、そのオープニングは、いろんな形でBGMとして、
流れているのでおそらく聴いた事がある方もいるだろう。
是非、その耳で、確かめてみて下さい。
次のアルバム「AMMONIA AVENUE（1984）」
での収録曲「.Don't Answer Me」もお忘れなく。
