   カナダのプリンス・エドワード島。グリーンゲイブルズと呼ばれる土地に住むマシュウとマリラ兄妹のもとにある日やってきたのは、赤い髪とそばかすの小さな少女、アン・シャーリー。孤児院から男の子を引き取ったつもりが、手違いで女の子が来てしまったのだ。一度はアンを孤児院に返そうと思ったマリラだが、やがて考え直し、アンはグリーンゲイブルズに住めることに…。女の子なら誰でも知っている、ルーシー・モード・モンゴメリーの原作を高畑勲監督でアニメ化。宮崎駿、近藤喜文ら、後のスタジオジブリ作品の担い手達がこぞってスタッフとしてクレジットされている、1979年放送の「世界名作劇場」である。
   空想好きで、よく笑い、泣き、怒るアンは、「名作」シリーズ中もっとも感情の起伏が激しい主人公。そんなアンが、マシュウの包み込むような愛、マリラの厳しい親心、さらに「心の友」ダイアナとの交流などを通して成長していく様子がみずみずしくつづられる。グリーンゲイブルズをはじめとしたアヴォンリーの村の田園風景は美しく、そしてその中でアンが繰り広げる想像の描写もアニメならではの鮮やかさと大胆さに満ちている。オープニング映像も出色の出来ばえだ。
   素晴らしい原作と、日本アニメ界屈指の才能の幸福な出会い。「赤毛のアン」は、「世界名作劇場」シリーズが到達した、間違いなく最高傑作のひとつだと言える。（安川正吾）

進学をする為の試験に合格したアン。
そして、その結果も一番！
そんな折、街の病院への寄付集めでホテル行われるコンサートでアンは詩の朗読を行います。
周りは詩の朗読者のプロや街のお洒落な女性たち･･･
でもアンはギルバートに負けたくないという気持ちからそのコンサートを無事乗り越えます。

その時のいでたちは･･･淡い水色のドレスに髪をひとつに束ねた、素敵な女性でした。
また、マシューがこの日のためにアンにプレゼントしたパールのネックレスも輝いていました。
気が付けばすっかり大人になったアン。
そしてクィーンズ学園へ旅立つえという新しいアンの生活が始まる回が収められたDVDです。

是非、大人になったアンをご覧下さい。ここからまたアンの戦いが始まりますよ･･･

アンの健やかな成長の影でカスバート兄妹の確かな老いを感じさせられる。
視聴者が大人になればなる程、マリラの感覚に親近感を感じるのではないでしょうか？
時の経過と老いが、素晴らしく表現されています。

また、ご覧になっている方ならお気づきでしょうが、特にマリラの表情を見て頂きたい。
ちょっと丸くなったというか穏やかな顔つきになっているのに気づきます（回想シーンが出てくるので見比べてみましょう）
アンが出て行った後のカスバート家は、物凄い演出力を感じます。
アンが、この家の太陽だったのだと身に染みます。
この繊細な表現が『赤毛のアン』によりリアリティを与えていると思います。
こういった芝居をアニメで出来る作家はなかなかいません。
そこが、高畑アニメの面白さだと思います。
