This TV adaptation of the cult sci-fi novel Dune needed a wider palette of sounds than the 1984 film (scored by Toto). Composer Revell saw the material as requiring several distinct areas of scoring. Briefest of these are the minuet-style regal moments for the Emperor (such as "Navigator Advises"). There is an Asian influence for the treacherous Harkonnens, Arabic rhythms and wind instruments for the desert nomads ("Travel with Fremen"), and then holding everything together is the noble Main Theme representing the journey of Paul Atreidies from boy to Man/Messiah. It goes through many variations, ultimately becoming fused with the Arabic Fremen soundscape ("Paul Chooses--Finale"). A lot of the album's hour-plus running time is taken by sustained atmospheres of sound (eg "Pain Box"). It's divided into three parts, and it's in the final third that some earlier rapid-fire programmed percussion ("Up the Ladder/Battle") pays off with furious Arabic-laced non-stop action. In particular, the cues "Conquering the Worm", "Paul Reigns" and "Jihad Begins/Last Fight" are infectiously loud and fast. And they get faster. --Paul Tonks
