これは、新しいジャズです。ジョー・ザビヌル、ウェイン・ショーター、そして忘れてはならないミロスラフ・ヴィトウスらの新しい試みです。やがて、ファンキーになっていくバンドですが、本作では、まだ、瑞々しい試行錯誤している姿が素晴らしいアルバムです。ジャズといえば、あのタバコくさい音楽をイメージしがちですが、まるで音が空に向かって放射していくような爽やかさに包まれます。ジャコ・パストリアスはいませんが、勝るとも劣らないビトウスのべースもまた素晴らしく、偉大なバンドのプロローグとして輝くアルバムです。

１９７１年発表の第一作。ジョー・ザヴィヌル（key)、ウェイン・ショーター（sax)、
ミロスラフ・ヴィトウス(Ba)の三人を中心として結成。

バンド名から連想されるように、一曲目の「ミルキー・ウェイ」など環境音楽的な落ち着いたナンバーが多い。
後年のザヴィヌル独裁時代とは違い、ほぼ中心メンバーが平等に曲を共作し、提供しているためか
ファンク色は薄く、マイルス・デイヴィスの「イン・ア・サイレント・ウェイ」の延長線的な出来になっている。本作では
ザヴィヌルはリーダーというよりキャリアある作曲家として一目置かれているといったポジションで、演奏面で
目立っているのはウェイン・ショーターの異次元の扉を開くような怪しいサックスと、ヴィトウスの技巧と創造性に
富んだ激しいアップライト・ベースの突っ走りぶりである。チック・コリアの「ナウ・ヒー・シングス、ナウ・ヒー・ソブス」で見せた
歌うようなベースからの成長を見せるかのように、ドラムも含めリズム隊を一人でこなすような力強いベースを
披露している。

本作はザヴィヌルの思惑とは程遠かったはずであろう。その証拠に他のリズム隊はファンク畑の人間から
選ばれているが、そのファンク臭は見事にヴィトウスに打ち消されている。その反面、若きヴィトウスの才能と勇姿が
刻まれたアルバムとしては最高傑作の一つといえる。

本作から「ミステリアス・トラヴェラー」まで、バンドの主導権争いがしばらく続くことになるわけだが、
中期以降のソフト・マシーンやゴングなどのカンタベリー系ジャズロックやECM系とサウンド面で親和性があり、
初期WRはザヴィヌル独裁期にはない面白さがある。

WRは一枚目から最終作までどの作品にも最高傑作だと言うファンがいるという話も納得です。
