96年に自主制作されたというデビュー作が98年にメジャー・リリースされるや、全米でジワジワとセールスを伸ばし、かの“オズフェスト”や“ウッドストック'99”といった大型フェスティバルへも出演を果たすなか、なんと、いつの間にか300万枚を越える売り上げを記録し、ついにはトリプル・プラチナムまでもを獲得した──という、アメリカはボストン出身の4人組の、満を持してのセカンド・アルバム。アメリカ本国では昨年10月にリリース済みという本作も、すでにゴールド・ディスクに届いているとのことだが、メタリカとアリス・イン・チェインズを合わせたかのようなヘヴィにうねるアタックの強いメタリック音像は、確かに、現代アメリカの王道ロックなのだろう。もともとドラマーだったというシンガーの“妙に粘っこいジェイムズ・ヘットフィールド(メタリカ)”風唱法も、決してガナらず、意外に丁寧なその歌いまわしにはリアルな歌心が脈打っている。 (奥村裕司) --- 2001年04月号
