Ron Fountainberry, lead and creator of the Incredible Moses Leroy, has magazine people talking in superlatives with his 16-track
Electric Pocket Radio. His first full-album release on the Ultimatum label, this is a tall and varied mix of every bright sound between stand-alone electronic harmony and table-lamp jazz. Every element here describes something like adventure or fearlessness--and every completed journey seems a complete translation of something at least Fountainberry feels. Maybe nothing's going to crack open when you listen to the San Diego (self-confessed) "pop music archivist" but you will probably find a few things that make good sense to you and will probably walk away in a better mood for it.
Some of the high points include: "Beep Beep Love", a strange sugary cover of a 1970s Dutch (Gruppo Sportivo) hit; "Fuzzy", a rare gentle Sandpipers-based song; "It's a Sunday", a strong, friendly burst of rhythm-rock and "Don't Say to Me It's Over", a distorted accordion dirge. Comparisons with Beck, Elliot Smith and Cibo Mato aside, this is one of the very best albums of the year so far. --G Clipper
