   マイルス・ディヴィスは、40年代末からジャズの第一線で活躍してきた偉大なミュージシャンである。その彼が、自身のバンドを率いてハードバップと呼ばれるジャズのスタイルを確立させた、歴史的アルバムである。
   当時まだ新人だったテナーサックスのジョン・コルトレーンをサイドマンに起用。本作は、バンド全員が共通の音楽的コンセプトにもとづいて演奏を推進させるというハードバップの理念を実現させた、いわゆるフォービートジャズの典型ともいうべきものだ。
   録音はほとんどリハーサルもせず、マイルスのカリスマ的指導力によって、ごく短期的に行われたという。セロニアス・モンクの名曲<1>が取りあげられているが、マイルスの斬新な解釈によって彼の代表曲となった。（後藤雅洋）

マイルスのアルバムですが、他のメンバーも凄い演奏です。
この5人がそれぞれ素晴らしい演奏をしたことによって
このアルバムは生まれました。
「Round Midnight」の印象が強いのでしっとりしたアルバムと
思う方もいるかもしれませんが、曲調はバラエティーに富んでおり
飽きることなく、ある意味発見や驚き、感動しながら

最後の曲まで一気に聴くことが出来ますよ！
聴いて「得したな」と素直に思えるお奨めの一枚です。

表題曲はセロニアスモンクのペンによるものだ。しかしこのマイルスとコルトレーンのユニゾンによりジャズのスタンダールになった感がする。このゾクゾクする緊張感と浮遊感。絡むピアノにベース、ドラム。王者の貫禄と、飽くなき音楽探究心。モードジャズなんて括りではなく純粋に音楽として20世紀の最も幸せな記録の一つである

1956年に発表したマイルスのアルバムです。
1曲目はセロニアス・モンクの曲を「マイルスの知恵袋」
とも呼ばれたギル・エヴァンスがアレンジしたものです。あとは
チャーリー・パーカーの「アー・リュー・チャ」など
良質な楽曲が次々と飛び出してきて、これ以上ない満足感と
陶酔感を得られる作品です。ジャズ通の方から、ジャズを聴いてみようかなって
方まで誰にでもお勧めです＾＾
