自意識過剰でナルシスティックで挑発的なロックスター（死語？）って、最近いませんよね？このＳＵＥＤＥのブレットアンダーソン、まさにそんな人でした。アクターとオーディエンスの距離感がどんどん狭まっているような昨今、こんな毒々しくって近寄りがたいような人はもう現れないのかもしれません。パフォーマンスが「毒」ならば、この１ｓｔも見事に「毒」な内容です。発売当時、ブレットが「大衆を堕落させたい」と言っていたとおり、歌詞は近親相姦やホモセクシャルなど、タブーを連発。（「陵辱」なんて和訳詞、見たことありますか？笑）そんなエロ歌詞にエロい曲調が乗っかるもんですから、聴くほうはもうたまりません。ガクガク腰がくだける感じがします。この頃のツアー映像を見たことがあるのですが、聴衆のカップル（？）が人目もはばからずに抱き合っているシーンが映っていました。そんな気持ちになるってことが妙にうなずけてしまっていた当時の自分は、やっぱり立派なＳＵＥＤＥ中毒者だったのでしょう。ちなみにこの頃の初期ＳＵＥＤＥのＣＤジャケット、イエローモンキーのアルバム「ＳＭＩＬＥ」がパクってます。吉井和哉もＳＵＥＤＥのファンであると公言していました。いずれにしても華々しかった９０年代英国ロックの偉大な遺産のひとつです。歴史を辿るにも避けては通れない作品だと思います。

偉大なバンド「Suede」のファーストアルバム。彼らの持つ毒性が見事に表現されている作品です。

同性愛、近親相姦などの危険なキーワードが彼らの作る独特のメロディに載る。これらが見事に絡み合って、中毒性の高いSuedeの「音」になります。
この、絶対に彼ら以外には誰も出せないSuedeの「音」は必聴です。ぜひ彼らの毒を味わってみてください。

今から10時年以上も前にリリースされた、SUEDEのデビューアルバム。
そもそも、彼らはデビュー自体が衝撃的だった。
ゲイの様な出で立ち、発言、そしてそれは彼らの音楽にも反映された。が、実は、ある意味では凄く男らしい部分もあった。ブレットの艶のある、妖しく裏返る声と、バーナードのノイジーでラウドなギターは、時に、殴り合いの喧嘩をしている様にも聴こえる。(実際にこのアルバムの後、二人の仲がおかしくなっちゃったけど)
これは、そんな彼らを語るに必聴なアルバム。
やっぱり、SUEDEとは、
しなやかで妖しい耽美さ、破壊的で退廃した荒々しさ、正に「LOVE&POISON」なバンドだった。
