   才人ジャン・コクトーの監督としての代表作のひとつ。ボーモン夫人の有名なおとぎ話を、原作以上にファンタジックな世界として映画化した。野獣が孤独に暮らす森のなかの屋敷に迷いこんだ商人。野獣のお気に入りのバラを折ってしまった彼は、身代わりに娘ベルを差し出せと迫られる。ベルは自ら森の屋敷に赴き、野獣の心に優しさを見つけるが…。
   ベルに求婚する男と野獣の2役を演じるのがジャン・マレー。自らの美神でもあるマレーに、恐ろしい野獣メイクをさせたところに、コクトーのサディスティックで屈折した愛が感じられる。野獣に対して遠慮なく「醜い！」と言い放つベルをはじめ、周囲の人物のトゲのある会話もコクトーならでは。燭台の手や彫像の顔が本物の人間であるという屋敷の美術や、過剰なほどゴージャスなファッションの魅力は、モノクロの画面でも十二分に伝わってくる。凝った背景に、結末を含めて予想を超える唐突な展開、俳優たちの（いい意味での）大げさな演技。この様式美は、歌舞伎と通じるものがある。（斉藤博昭）

　詩人であるジャン・コクトーが１９４６年に監督した映画です。

　１９４６年ということでもちろん白黒の時代に作られた映画なのですが、その当時、まだＣＧなどの映像処理の技術が発達していなかったということが、この映画にとってはとても有効に働いています。例えば、野獣が住む宮殿の広い廊下に、人間の手の形をした燭台がズラッと並んでいるシーンがあるのですが、その手がローソクを持って動く際に、あからさまに生身の人間の手だということがわかるのですが、そこが逆にいい雰囲気を出しているんです。なんというのでしょう・・・、アナログ感というか、レトロな雰囲気というか、適切な表現が見つかりませんが、とにかくそういった機械の感じがしない手作り感が映画全体に温かみを与えているのです。

　しかし、そんな温かみも最後のシーンで個人的にちょっとガクッと来てしまいました。『美女と野獣』のストーリはディズニーでもアニメ化しているぐらい有名なので、書いてもいいと思いますが、この映画の最後に野獣が王子様に戻るシーンがあるんです。本来であれば、カッコイイ王子様に戻ってヒロインとＬＯＶＥＬＯＶＥ幸せでよかったね、となるのでしょうが、本作では野獣から王子様に戻った後、その王子様の服装があろう事か思いっきりモッコリタイツなのです。あの、バレエを踊る男性が着るようなタイツです。そのタイツを着て王子様が颯爽と現れるのですが、このシーンは正直「えぇ・・・」と思って引いてしまいました。やっぱり時代ですかねェ、王子様といえばタイツ、そういう時代だったんでしょうかねェ。

　全編を通じて古き良き時代の雰囲気がすごくいい感じの映画だったのですが、最後の最後でその古い感じが悪い方に働いてしまった感じです。月日が経つのは怖いものですねェ・・・。

ストーリーも映像もよかったです。
ただ、個人的にはエンディングの映像だけが気に入りません。それさえなければ星５つでした。
ＣＧばかりの最近の映像にはうんざりという人にもお薦めです。
