Brazilian trio Azymuth turned out a run of bestselling albums in the 1970s and 1980s, including Cascades in 1982 and Rapid Transit the following year, all in their trademark samba doido, or crazy samba style. As marketing terms goes, that one is wide of the mark, for there is nothing crazy about this music, nor is all of it a samba. Instead, a combination of strong melodic hooklines, insistent rhythms, intelligent playing and smooth studio production evoke a relaxed, more carefree way of life that remains highly appealing to those us living in chillier climes. Suspect Brazilian clichés of carnival mayhem and hyperactive percussion are largely avoided in favour of a more subtle approach--both electric and acoustic--that makes good use of the basic keyboard, guitar and percussion format with added solo instrumentalists as required. This is a group that can funk with the best of them, that did so on numerous occasions on stages and in festivals around the world, but it also proved time and again that less often achieves far more.
