ブラーのデーモン・アルバーンとヒップホップ界のプロデューサー、ダンジ・オートメーターがサウンドを手掛ける新人バンド。ダブなどクラブ系音楽の要素を取り込んだクールなサウンドだ。

二次元の世界から飛び出したヴァーチャル・バンド、というふれこみで登場したGORILLAZ。各メンバーのキャラなど、やたらと細かい(架空の)設定が施されてるんで、詳しくはwww.gorillaz.comでどうぞ。で、実体は、ブラーのデーモン・アルバーン、チボ・マットの羽鳥美保、ブエナ・ビスタ・ソシアル・クラブのイブライム・フェレールらによる、お遊び感覚の強いユニット。ノリとしては、国籍も年齢も性別も違う、けれど気の合う仲間が集まって好き勝手にセッションしました、ってところか。パーティ感覚の強いヒップホップを軸に、各メンバーの音楽的個性が違和感ありつつも混ざり合っている。やりたいことはなんでもやっちゃうよん的なフットワークの軽さは、ちょっと初期ビースティ・ボーイズを想わせる。なおプロデューサーは、プリンス・ポールやDJシャドウなどの仕事で有名なダン・ジ・オートメイター。このメンツでもう1枚作ってほしいな。 (土佐有明) --- 2001年05月号

Blurのデイモンアルバーンや日本代表でチボマットの羽鳥ミホが参加してることで話題性十分だけど、
音の方はもっとヤバい事になっている！
一聴して、え？って思った人がほとんどだと思う。
キャッチーな曲は皆無、その代わり噛めば噛むほどのスルメ盤になってます。

ＵＫロックなんかが好きな人をダブやヒップホップへ誘いでくれるいいキッカケかも知れません。
ベストトラックはやっぱりクリントイーストウッド。
題名からして人を喰ってていいけど、理屈ぬきにカッチョイ~。

一度聞いたらやめられない音楽、それは【gorillaz】！！
輸入盤には日本版と違う、１６曲入り!!
特に11曲目の『19-2000』がプロモもそろってお気に入り★
カートゥーンバンドです。。

ロック、パンク、ヒップホップ、ダブ、
様々なジャンルの橋渡し的な存在として、
これ程適任なアルバムを僕は他に知らない。

どんなに奇を衒ったトラックでも、一度デーモン・アルバーンの
ヴォーカルが吹き込まれると、途端にポップに聴こえてしまう
マジック。いやー、いい声してるなぁ。見直しました。
他にも、やたらとクオリティーが高く格好良いPV。
アニメに投身されたキャラクターがインタビューに応じ、
某国へのきつい皮肉をユーモアたっぷりに語ってみせる姿勢等々、
様々な分野でみせる独自のセンスも魅力の一つ。

世界で1000万枚近く売れたのも納得の、意義あるポップアルバム。
