ELPというと「頭脳改革」、「展覧会の絵」をイチ押しする方が多いんですが、自分的には彼等の３作目にあたる'72年リリースの本作がNo.1なんです。
ファーストから「Ladies & Gentlemen」頃までのELP作品は、どれも高水準で魅力的です。そんな中で個人的Bestとする理由は、彼等が本作で見せてくれる作曲センスとアレンジの美しさにあります。
筆頭にあげたいのは"From the beginning"。イントロのギター、新鮮なリズム、Gregの澄みきったヴォーカル、琴線に触れる美しい名曲です。今回Live versionも加えられている"Hoedown"もファンから人気の高いメロディアスな逸品ですし、組曲風の"Trilogy"、"Endless Enigma"も充実したplayとともに曲自体が魅力的な旋律に満ちています。

彼等の作品の中ではGregのカラーが前面に出た作品であり、驚きや熱狂といった要素は他の作品に比べて少ないものの、瑞々しい情感を重視した秀作と思っています。ELPのファーストが好きな方には特に共感いただけるかもしれません。
