1965年と68年にそれぞれリリースされたビーチボーイズの『Party!』と『Stack-O-Tracks』という2枚のLPが、ボーナストラックのついた2枚組CDとしてEMIから発売された。レコード会社を説得し、次作『Pet Sounds』を手がける一方で、ビーチ・ボーイズのリーダー、ブライアン・ウィルソンは『Party!』では奇抜なアイデアを取り入れた。バンドメンバーがスタジオに友人を大勢呼び、その様子をそのまま録音したのだ。そしてにぎやかな騒ぎ声や、パーティーの雰囲気を後から多重録音として重ねたのだった。だから楽器演奏にまとまりがないように感じられるが、間違いなくメンバーが演奏している。自作のメドレー『I Get Around』と『Little Deuce Coupe』を除いて、すべての曲がカバー曲である。Jan And DeanのDean Torrenceのヒット曲『Barbara Ann』や、ジョン・レノンがボブ・ディランの影響を受けて作った『You've Got To Hide Your Love Away』をデニス・ウィルソンがカバーしているのがいい。『Stack-o-Tracks』はビーチ・ボーイズの作品の中で最も特徴的なアルバムであると評価されている。60年代半ばからの大ヒット曲15曲を、ボーカルを抜いて演奏部分だけ録音したものだ。初のカラオケバージョンともいえる。実際には、オリジナル版は歌詞カード、楽譜つきでリリースされ、歌、演奏を共に楽しむことができる稀有な一枚だ。Chris King

Originally released in 1965 and 68 respectively, the two Beach Boys LPs Party! and Stack-O-Tracks are now available, as part of the EMI 2-for-1 series, on one disc and with the addition of three bonus tracks.

Hoping to placate the record company and thereby buy himself valuable time to continue working on Pet Sounds, head Beach Boy Brian Wilson conjured the Party! concept. The band invited a gang of friends to the recording studio, sunk a few beers and proceeded to record the supposedly spontaneous results. In fact, the waggish banter and party atmosphere were overdubbed later. For once, the--admittedly sparse--acoustic instrumentation, is actually provided by the band. With the exception of a medley of their own "I Get Around" and "Little Deuce Coupe", all the tracks are covers. Highlights of this ragged and far from essential set include the surprise hit "Barbara Ann", featuring a harmonising Dean Torrence of Jan And Dean, and a Dennis Wilson-led take on John Lennon's Dylan pastiche, "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away".

Stack-o-Tracks is probably the most bizarre album in the Beach Boys catalogue and frankly, that's quite some achievement. It consists of instrumental backing tracks from 15 of the band's biggest early to mid-60s hits, with the vocals simply erased. Fundamentally, it's an early attempt at karaoke. Indeed, the original release was accompanied by a song booklet, complete with full musical arrangements and lyrics, to aid those wishing to play and sing along. It's most odd. --Chris King

パーティの風景を「えぃやぁ」で録り終えた作品といわゆるカラオケです。もともと別もんですから悩まなくてもいいのですが、通しで聞くとなると「う〜む」です。パーティの方は意外とすんなりとビートルズの作品を歌うので驚いた記憶があります。いまから考えたらビートルズの曲をビーチボーイズがもっと歌ったら素敵なアルバムが１枚作れたような気がしますね。粗製濫造かなって当時思ったのですが、こうしてじっくり聞くと上手に作られているなあって感心しながら聞いてしまいました。決して「えぃやぁ」で録っていなかったのですねえ。

２ＬＰのカップリングで「Party!」は、シングルヒット「バーバラ・アン」が入っており、楽しいが、もう１枚＋ボーナストラックの「Stack-O-Tracks」は、ボーカルもバックコーラスも無いインストルメンタルなのだが、後にステレオ版「Pet Sounds」の素材が含まれているのです。良く聴いて下さい。「Pet Sounds」収録曲のいくつかは、リアルステレオなのです。これは完成版のバックトラックであり、あのBOX SET「Pet Sounds Sessions」にも入っていないものです。これは貴重です。これに、メンバーが歌をダビングした上でモノラル化したのが当時の「Pet Sounds」なのです。技術的な問題ではなく、ブライアンは、当時、ステレオの場合、再生するスピーカーのセッティングが悪いと、製作意図がリスナーに伝わらないと考え、敢えてモノラルにしたのです。ブライアンは片耳の聴力が悪いからという説もありますが、それが理由では無いのです。結局３０年記念（実際は遅れましたが）のステレオ化したものを聴いたブライアンは、「モノでは聞こえなかった音まで聞こえる！」と驚嘆したのでした。

ビーチ・ボーイズでもとりわけユニークなアルバムのカップリングである。まず、パーティー・アルバムは、その名の通り、スタジオでパーティーを開き、それをそのままレコーディングしたもの。ノンストップ３１分のこのアルバムは、ビーチ・ボーイズの作品群の中で楽しさでいえば随一のものである。クリスマスの時期に合わせてリリースされたこともあり、実に賑やかなアルバムだ。でもよく聴くと、やはりブライアンの実に細かいこだわりを垣間見る事が出来る。いかに自然なパーティーの流れにするか、仲間のヤジや拍手をいかに効果的に使うか、など、計算に計算を重ねていることが分かる。しかし出てくる音は自然なパーティーの流れそのものなのだ。まさに、サウンドコラージュの天才、ブライアンの面目躍如!である。また、乾いた音質の気持良さにも触れておきたい。このカラッと乾いたギターとコンガに、センスあるベース、コーラスが絡んだだけで、素晴らしい音楽になってしまうのだから、もうビーチ・ボーイズ万歳である。ビートルズ・ナンバーも収録され、聞き比べも楽しいだろう。私が好きなトラックは、ゼアズ・ノー・アザーで、ブライアンのリードが絶品、コーラスも緻密だがパーティーという場の即興性を失わず、大変楽しく素晴らしい。ラストのバーバラ・アンは世界的大ヒットを記録した。もう一方のスタック・オー・トラックスは、いわばカラオケ・アルバム。ボーカルを抜き去ったバック・トラックだけが収録されている。かつて単独の時は楽譜が付いていたが、今回のＣＤには付いていないようだ。パーティーの賑やかさの後のこのカラオケの寂しさは結構しんどい。有名なヒット曲も少なく、普通のファンには退屈だろう。やっぱり、ビーチ・ボーイズは声がなければねぇ。でもこれはパーティー・アルバムだけで絶対買いだよ！
