このディスクは、ビーチ・ボーイズの2つのアルバム――『Friends』と『20/20』――を1枚に収め、リマスタリングし、ボーナス・トラックを加えたものだ。1968年、『Friends』を録音するころになると、ビーチ・ボーイズのヘッドとしてのブライアン・ウィルソンの地位はしだいに揺らぎ始める。まだブライアンが中心人物であることに変わりはなかったが、ソングライティングはバンドの中で平等に分担するようになっていたのだ。結果はやはり統一感に欠ける仕上がりとなった。というのも、ブライアン印のポケット・シンフォニー（「Passing By」、「Busy Doin' Nothin」、「Wake the World」）とは相容れないタイプの曲（「Transcendental Meditation」、「Anna Lee, The Healer」、「Little Bird」）があるからだ。
1969年にリリースされた『20/20』は、ビーチ・ボーイズ本来のアルバムというより、キャピタル・レコードとの契約を満了させるため、あり合わせの音源を寄せ集めたものといったほうが当たっている。皮肉なことに、『Pet Sounds』以降のアルバムとしては最も出来がよく、首尾一貫したもののひとつになった。ヒット・シングルとしては、陽気でノスタルジックな「Do It Again」、カールがプロデュースしたロネッツの見事なカヴァー「I Can Hear Music」が出た。また、ブライアンの弟デニスが「Be With Me」で作曲家としての成長ぶりを見せつけているのは、まさに血は争えないといったところ。それに負けじとブライアンも、ぼう然とするようなアイデアの「Cabinessence」（未発表に終わったアルバム『Smile』のセッションより）、掛け値なしの大傑作「Time Alone」で迎え撃つ。また、悪名高い「Never Learn To Love」も収録。語り草となっているわりには何ということのない小品だが、これを書いたのは何を隠そうチャールズ・マンソンなのだ。5つのボーナス・トラックはこれよりずっと上出来で、とりわけ「Breakaway」は輝いている。（Chris King, Amazon.com）

20/20 was not a Beach Boys album proper, but rather a collection of odds and sods to fulfil their contract with Capital Records. Ironically, it's actually one of their finest and most coherent post-
Pet Sounds albums. Hit singles include the playfully nostalgic "Do It Again" and a superb Carl-produced cover of The Ronettes' "I Can Hear Music". Brother Dennis also gives notice of his maturing compositional skills with the broodily spectral "Be With Me". Not to be outdone, Brian chips in with the mind-boggling "Cabinessence"--culled from the
Smile sessions--and the truly transcendent "Time Alone". Also included is the notorious "Never Learn To Love", an underwhelming ditty, which, according to legend, was penned by none other than Charles Manson. Far better are the five bonus tracks, especially the dazzling "Breakaway".
