Though easily as consistent as their first two releases, it was Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' third release, Damn the Torpedoes, that catapulted Petty and company into the first rank of American rock acts. It's not hard to understand why. With a slate of driving songs destined to become FM staples ("Refugee," "Here Comes My Girl," "Even the Losers," "Don't Do Me Like That"), it's an album that plays much like half a greatest-hits collection. Fusing a rootsy sensibility heavy with Dylan and Byrds affectations with his own pop instincts (honed by early stints with Mudcrutch and Dwight Twilley) and coupling them with one of rock's most consistently underrated powerhouses, the Heartbreakers, Petty's throwback traditionalism oddly found him riding the crest of the new wave in the late '70s. 　ついに紙ジャケの登場です（ここAmazonでは情報ないけど、SHM-CDのようです…）！リマスターされても日本盤は無視され続けだったので、やっとですよ。この、“ちょと斜に構えた、不敵な面構え”のジャケ写がまた、いいんだよねぇ〜。
　3作目にして、フロイド、M・ジャクソン、イーグルスにB・ジョエルと並んで、ビルボート年間チャートでも5位の大ヒット。なのに週間チャートでは“7週連続2位“という、永遠の2番手って感じが彼ららしい（笑）

　今作からJ・アイオヴァインがプロデュース。“まるで、ストーンズやバーズをバックにディランが唄う”かのような、このバンドの特性を見事に捉えているね。そう、青春の「痛み」「孤独」「苛立ち」といった若者特有の私的な感情を、青臭いながらも普遍的な短編物語に昇華させたソングライティングに、荒削りで成熟とは無縁の、シンプルかつストレートなロックに乗せて、時に熱く激しく、時にクールに表現しきった初期の傑作！
　
　キーボードが弾ける軽快な（6）は初のトップ10ヒット。｢僕らは避難民の様に生きることはない。信じられることを信じよう！｣と歌う、初期代表曲（1）、B・タイラーもカバーした、美しいミディアム・バラッド（9）など、捨て曲一切無し。この機会に、多くの人に彼らの凄さを体験してほしいな。

１９５０年フロリダ州ゲインズビル生まれ。南部出身。これは３枚目。このトムという人はレコード会社のトラブルに巻き込まれやすい人物なようで、シェルターレコードがＭＣＡに吸収されたりとトムはさんざんな目にあってきている苦労人。トムのシニカルな視点はそのジグザグな人生から来ているのであろうか。このアルバムは６０年代のバーズ、ローリングストーンズ、ビートルズ、キンクスなどのブリテッシュインベージョンの影響とエッセンスを淘汰して選りすぐったという凄みがあふれている。トムのソングライティングセンスは群抜いており、初期にソロで売ろうと画策されたのもうなずける。バックバンド＝ハートブレイカーズとの息の合った演奏も注目すべきハイライト。マイクキャンベルのギターとベン??ントテンチの鍵盤はかなりすぐれている。プロデューサーはジミーアイオバンであり、このアルバムのヒットでダイアーストレーツ、Ｕ２などを引き受けることになる。非常にすっきりした音像を製作できる人物。耳がかなり鋭いプロデューサーだ。全体的には６０年代のルーツミュージックを南部感覚というフィルターに通して見事＝時の風化に耐えうる音楽を創造したことを認めざるをえない。
シニカルな性格と独特のリリシズムを持つメロディーラインと見事なプロデュースワークとバックバンドとの融合がバランスよく成立した非常に数少ない名盤。　　１０点中１０点
ニールヤング、ボブディラン、バーズのへんがルーツなので相当日本では売りにくかったろうと推察する。とにかく外見、第一印象は『地味』なの??ある。

第3作めの本作品はバンド前期の傑作、バンドの代表作でもある、かつ80年前後のロック・アルバムの中の名盤中の名盤でもあり、「ザ・アメリカン・ロック・バンド」としての地位を築いたアルバムでもあります、

本作まではハード・ドライビングな曲を得意としていました、この後、音楽の志向がポップさをまし、印象としては地味な音作りになっていきます、このみの分かれるところと思います、ヒット曲が多いアルバムなのでベスト・アルバムのような印象もあり、ロック・ファンにはだれにでも推薦できます、得にボブ・ディランとバーズ、初期のビートルズを好まれる方はきに入ると思います、初めてトム・ペティを購入する場合はやはりベスト・アルバムがいいでしょう、
