Product Description

Amazon.com essential recording

Compared with the Broadway cast recording, the 1956 soundtrack to the film version of The King and I wins hands down. Yul Brynner is the king (literally and figuratively) in both formats (how could anyone else own such a role?), but the movie's score has better sonics, Brynner's voice is stronger, and the tunes are more memorable (thanks to Alfred Newman's conducting and Ken Darby's scoring) than on any of the various cast recordings. Marni Nixon sings the role of Anna (played onscreen by Deborah Kerr), Brynner delivers his hallmark performance, and the best-loved tunes--"Hello, Young Lovers," "Getting to Know You," and "I Whistle a Happy Tune" are the versions we'll always remember. A classic. --James Hendrickson

5.0 out of 5 stars

「Shall we
dance?」

5.0 out of 5 stars Brings the movie back to life, 2005/5/30
By the_bernie-at-tx-rr-com "xyzzy" (Arlington, Texas, U.S.A.) - See all my reviews
This is the sound track of “The King and I” (1956), a musical retelling of “Anna and the King of Siam” and the third Rodgers & Hammerstein Broadway hit. Naturally a movie sound track can not hold a candle to the play if you have seen it. However this is the version I grew up with. And this is the version I bought. Many of the Songs were written for this story and have no meaning outside of the context of the film. Yet many people can relate to where they were when they saw the film or have been in similar situations and the songs match their life. Everyone has a favorite my two are “Getting to Know You” and “Hello, Young Lovers”
