第二期ルネッサンス。そのデビューアルバム「プロローグ」（これ、なぜかダンフォードいないわよね）もいいけど、なんてったって、この２枚目のアルバム「燃ゆる灰」は最高。アニー・ハズラムのボーカルが泣けるわ。特に、「Can You Understand」。出だしのピアノから、もうたまんない。そして、"Ashes Are Burning"、２０分近い大曲！　すさまじい展開ののち、アニーの天使の歌声。ノックアウトです。

英国のクラシカルロックバンド、ルネッサンスのアルバム。1973作
「燃ゆる灰」のタイトルで知られるバンドを代表する傑作の紙ジャケリマスター盤。
美しいピアノが鳴り響く、1曲目の“Can You Understand”のイントロからして、
このバンドのクラシカルな叙情美がすべて味わえるという…もう最高である。
そこに瑞々しいアニー・ハズラムの歌声が加わると、世界はしっとりとした優しさに包まれる。
どこかまだフォーク的な牧歌性を残したメロディに、艶やかなストリングスが重なって
雄大でありながらも、英国の優雅な土臭さともいうべき感触がとても耳に優しい。
ライブでの定番曲“Carpet of the Sun”の爽やかさにはうっとりと聞き入ってしまうし、
11分に及ぶラストのタイトル曲は、フォーキーなやわらかさで始まりつつ、
クラシカルな間奏部をはさんでラストに向かって盛り上がる感動的な名曲だ。

いまから約２０年も前にこのアルバムを買って、今ではそれをダビングしたカセットのテープを聴くのみになってしまっていた。当時のカセットデッキでの録音というのは、マニュアルで録音レベルを調整していたせいか、音質の劣化を免れているものが多いのである。で、最近ほんとうに久しぶりにこの所持しているレコードに針を落として聴いてみたのたが、やはりいつも聴きなれたテープの音に較べると高音部分がよく出る。（ヒスノイズも出るが）これは改めて気がついたことなのだが、楽器の音の処理の方法が非常に巧みなのである。巧みというものおかしいのだが。このルネッサンスというバンド、壮大なオーケストラを導入したりして、時には煩いくらいにいろいろな楽器の音が飛び交うのだけれども、それでも聞いた感じのバラバラ感というものがないのは、これは推測であるが、曲によっては楽器（ギター、ベース、ドラムといった基本セットのことである）のパート別録音ではなく「同時録音」をしていたせいではないのだろうか。ちょっとそこが謎なのだ。それとも最新のデジタルマスタリングの施されたＣＤが出たら買うべきなのだろうか。
