山下達郎がひとりでアカペラに挑戦した８０年代の名盤が、ボーナストラック付きで買えます。しかも、アサヒビールのＣＭ「スーパーモルト」の曲や「アマポーラ」「サイレントナイト」などの名曲に、山下達郎が奏でる絶妙なハーモニーで聴けます。 アカペラに興味ある方だけでなく、癒されたいあなたにもお勧めします。

当時のＦＭで、このアルバムの特集が組まれておりました。どうやって曲を作り上げていったのかも、本人の口から語られ、非常に興味深く聞いた記憶があります。マニアックだった前作からポピュラー度が上がり、「Amapola」の美しいハーモニーから、「ホワイトクリスマス」まで、まさに他の追随を許さない一人アカペラが展開されます。「You make me feel brand new」には、当時とりわけしびれました。スタイリスティックスの原曲をしのいだと言っても過言ではないでしょう。どこまでもどこまでも伸びやかに続く、山下達郎のバックコーラスも聴きどころです。

山下達郎のア・カペラの「On the street corner」に出会ってから、もう四半世紀が経ちました。

当時、合唱関係者以外には「ア・カペラ」という言葉に馴染みがなかったわけで、まして一人で全てのパートを歌う「ア・カペラ」は非常に珍しい試みでした。
普通、どんなコーラスグループでもメンバーの声質は異なりますから、ハーモニーの響きを合わせるのは、結構難しいものです。ただ、達郎は、自分の声を４パート＋アルファの声部を重ねて録音しているわけですから、当然良くハモリます。

人間の音域というものは、そんなに広くありません。４パートのコーラスを歌うとなると相当広い音域が要求されます。達郎はテナーですから、ベースは無理して出しています。でもそれなりに胸に響かせて雰囲気をかもしだしているのは、立派です。

この「On the street corner　2」は、第1作よりももっとポップス色を強め、もう少し幅広い年代や音楽ジャンルから曲を収録しています。最後の「SILENT　NIGHT」と「WHITE　CHRISTMAS」は秀逸で、これだけ聴いてもこの試みの素晴らしさは理解できると思います。個人的には有名な「SO　MUCH　IN　LOVE」の軽快さがたまらなく好きですが。

他のどの曲もノリがよく、聴き込めば聴きこむほど、細部までよく練られたアレンジとボーカルだと感心しました。
「達郎恐るべし」ですね。
