   1950年代中期から1960年代初期にかけてアメリカのヴォーカルスタイルとして定着していた「ドゥー・ワップ」をベースに、山下達郎がひとり多重録音で作り上げたアカペラ・アルバム『ON THE STREET CORNER 1』を、ボーナストラックも加えてデジタルリマスター盤として新リリース。ヴォーカルグループ、デュプリーズがドゥー・ワップ・スタイルでリヴァイバルヒットさせた、ジョー・スタッフォードのロマンティックバラード<1>、神聖なコーラスが心を和ませるクローヴァーズのカヴァー<9>など、山下達郎が趣味でレコーディングした曲から、ライヴでもおなじみのナンバーまで、1950年代~1960年代の名曲の数々が温かいヴォーカルで鮮やかによみがえる。（武村貴世子）

ア・カペラと言えば山下達郎となったそのアルバムの再発売もの。しかし,実は’86年版とあるように,そのほとんどがメーン・ヴォーカルを入れなおしているようだ。ドゥー・ワップの名曲のカヴァーであるところも,山下らしい。名盤がやっと帰ってきた。

達郎のアカペラアルバムは、いつしかシリーズ化してしまいましたが、この『ON THE STREET CORNER 1』はその中で、もっとも気合が入っているＣＤです。しかし、初期盤（ＬＰ）と現在、再発されているＣＤでは違いがあり、ＲＥ-ＭＩＸされ、歌も再録音している違いがあります。音質は初期盤と違い、繊細で透明感があり、エコーが深くなっています。再発、初期盤、８６年ＭＩＸとありますが、それぞれ違った『ON THE STREET CORNER 1』が楽しめます。５０年代~６０年代、真の意味でタイトルを完成させたアルバムです。

山下達郎のア・カペラの「On the street corner」に出会ってから、もう四半世紀が経ちました。
当時、合唱関係者以外には「ア・カペラ」という言葉に馴染みがなかったわけで、まして一人で全てのパートを歌う「ア・カペラ」は非常に珍しい試みでした。

普通、どんなコーラスグループでもメンバーの声質は異なりますから、ハーモニーの響きを合わせるのは、結構難しいものです。ただ、達郎は、自分の声を４パート＋アルファの声部を重ねて録音しているわけですから、当然良くハモリます。

人間の音域というものは、そんなに広くありません。４パートのコーラスを歌うとなると相当広い音域が要求されます。達郎はテナーですから、ベースは無理して出しています。でもそれなりに胸に響かせて雰囲気をかもしだしているのは、立派です。

このＣＤは、1950~1960年代の「ドゥー・ワップ（DOO‐WOP）」を中心とした曲のカヴァーです。どの曲もノリがよく、聴き込めば聴きこむほど、細部までよく練られたアレンジとボーカルだと感心します。

山下達郎も５０歳を超えました。日本の音楽シーンに彼は様々な影響を与えてきました。いつまで突っ走っていくのでしょうかね。

伝説の名盤が、再発されました。 山下達郎が一人でアカペラ全てのパートをこなしていることに感動せずにいられません。とにかく素晴らしく感動のあまり痺れました。 あのゴスペラーズが学生時代に所属していたサークル「 Street corner synphony」は、このアルバムが由来となっています。

アカペラにすこしでも興味がある方は、またはゴスペラーズでアカペラに目覚めた方に絶対お勧めです。
