やってくれます、ストコ。神経逆なでするような「火星」、ドラマティックな「金星」、壮大で涙ちょちょ切れる「木星」。ペプシのキャンペーンに宇宙旅行があたる、というのがあったけど、それを逃した人はこのCDで存分に宇宙を浮遊できます。ストコフスキーの自己陶酔系のジャケットも◎。

この録音にはじめて出会ったのはいまから３０年前。
当時は１３００円の廉価盤LPでした。
世界初のステレオ録音の「惑星」だったかと思いますが、LPでも非常に音質がよい録音でした。
それがEMIの「Full Dimension」シリーズとしてリファインされ、音に磨きがかかりました。
演奏も超ドラマチックで、電車の中で全曲聴けるのは驚きです（他の演奏だと「金星」「水星」「冥王星」は飛ばしてしまいます。聴こえないし）。特に「火星」は圧巻。雑ですが、気迫に満ちた演奏です。

ストコフスキーらしさも満載で、オケの並べ方がヘン。
彼が考えた「大編成用」の配置なのですが、木星の「平原彩香」部分はイヤホンで聴くと拍子抜けします。
まあ、日米のオケがいま標準にしている並べ方はストコフスキーが考えたんですけどね。

リズムや楽器の改編もあちこちでありますが、それが御いやでなければ絶対お勧めの「惑星」です。

ステレオ初期の録音で、「惑星」を有名にしたカラヤン‐ウィーン・フィル盤よりも古い。「惑星」最初のステレオ録音なのでは？演奏のほうも、「火星」の終わりを妙に盛り上げてみたり、「木星」で総休止をはしょってみたりとストコフスキーらしいデフォルメを聴かせる。しかし、あんまり面白くない。この曲ならもっとストレートに演奏した方がいいんじゃいかと思ってしまうのは、オーケストラの響きが地味だからかも。同じ時期にストコフスキーがベルリン・フィルを指揮した方の録音（「火の鳥」と「ペトルーシュカ」）はかなり派手なだけに残念。なんでもう一度録音してくれなかったかな…
