アーサー・リーって本当に不思議な人だと思います。この当時の黒人にしてはブルーズ色は希薄でした。ラブの前身バンドでは自身のルーツに根ざした音楽をやっていた事もあるようですが、デビューアルバムはバーズ風ガレージパンクといった趣きでした。唯一セカンド、「ダ・カーポ」のLP時代でのB面全てを費やしたインプロヴィゼイションに黒人らしさを感じる事はできます。同期でロス出身の白人バンド、ドアーズでさえブルーズが根底に流れていた事を考えると、このような作品が生まれたのは、ギターのブライアンマクリーンの存在があったとは言え、あの時代がなし得た奇跡でしょう。10はボ・ディドリービートが出てきたり、ラップ調ではありますが曲全体を支配する要素でもなく一筋縄ではいかない曲。リーはジミヘンとも友人関係にあったらしく、確かにブルーズの奇形とも言えるジミヘンにも共通するところがあると思います。リー作、マクリーン作どれもが凝った曲構成やマイナー調的な展開など、何の情報もなしにこのアルバムを聴くとイギリスのバンドのようにも聴こえそうです。ボーナス13だけはポップな良質のソフトロックといった曲でこれがはずされたのも分かるような気がします。冒頭「アローンアゲインオア」（ダムドがカヴァー。先日の来日公演でもやってくれました）から、最後まで名曲群を完璧な演奏、アレンジ（ホーン、ストリングスアレンジも最高）で聴くことができます。3,4ではバーズやママス＆パパスなどで活躍した名セッションドラマー、ハルブレインが参加しています。

ラヴというバンドは、ベスト盤を聴いて以来凄く気に入っていたが、本当の意味で、ラヴの素晴らしさを痛感したのは、このアルバムを聴いてからだった。黒人でありながら、バーズやストーンズに深く傾倒したアーサー・リーが厭世感に取り憑かれながらも、自らの力を全て出し切った感のあるこの名作は、その名の通りに、聴く者すべての感性、人生観を永遠に変えてしまう魔力を持っている。フォーク、ガレージ、サイケデリック、マリアッチと豊富な音楽的語彙を持つアーサー・リーと、ドラッグでボロボロになっていたらしいバンドの
スワンソングと言うべき一大叙情詩は、永遠に色褪せることは無い。

60年代の空気、といっても僕は生まれてもいないのだからわからない。
けれど、確実にこのアルバムはそれを孕んでいると思う。
しかも矛盾するようだが、全然古びていない。
単なる雰囲気としてではなく、本当にロックで夢を見ていたであろうサイケデリックな調べは、癖になるほど心地よい。

何かに憑かれたようなアレンジは、狂気的で且つこの上なくポップだ。
アコースティックでフォーキーな楽曲は、他の人も書いているようにネオアコとかが好きな人なら間違いなくはまるだろう。
永遠に覚めない夢を見ているようなアルバム。
間違いなく必聴の一枚。
