この「Octopus」は、ロジャー・ディーンのジャケットに非常に興味を惹かれるところですが、なんでもアメリカではジャケットが差し替えられたバージョンがあるようです（収録内容は同一）。私のところにはアメリカ仕様が届いて非常に微妙な気分になりました。

現在の輸入版では、UK盤=ロジャー・ディーン、US盤≠ロジャー・ディーン、と決まっているわけではないようですが、2008年にColumbiaから発売されているUS盤は、安い代わりにロジャー・ディーンではありませんので気をつけましょう。

ジェントル・ジャイアントの4th。1973作
GGの代表作として人気のアルバム。サウンドに流れるようなスタイリッシュさが出てきて、
されとともにキャッチーな歌メロと、テクニカルなアンサンブルの対比もくっきりした傑作。
ピアノやハモンドなどの使い方も効果的で、ときにジャズタッチだったり、
哀愁溢れる叙情味を感じさせたりと、いろいろな要素を聴かせてくれる。
クラシカルなヴァイオリンの音色が加わったと思えば、ファンキーなパーカションや、
サックス、トランペットなどの管楽器が鳴り出し、また繊細なピアノと、曲は3〜4分台ながら
まるで万華鏡のように色の変わってゆく、濃密で構築的なプログレがたっぷり堪能できる。

様々なアーティストがプログレッシブロックと言われてひとくくりにされているが、ジェントル・ジャイアントはその究極なのではないだろうか。多用される変拍子、不協和音、目まぐるしい曲展開、転調、次々と持ち替えられる様々な楽器、そしてあくまで叙情性あふれる親しみやすいサウンド。１曲１曲さらりと聴けてしまうのに、中を覗くとおもわず笑ってしまうほど凝りに凝っている。そして全員がテクニシャンマルチプレイヤーであるメンバーたち。彼らは真のプログレッシブロックであると僕は思う。
そんな彼らの作品の中でも最高傑作の一つ(彼らの場合ほぼ全作が傑作である。)であるのが本作。僕は個人的には本作、そして次作「In A Glass House」が最高傑作だと思う。
彼らを代表するスーパーテクニカルインスト「The Boys In The Band」、得意の４声コーラスが大活躍する「Knots」、目まぐるしい曲展開に圧倒される「Raconteur, Troubadour」、彼らのサウンドがハードロックを基調にしていることがわかる「The Advant Of Panurge」、「Cry For Everyone」、弦楽器が美しい「Dog`s Life」、あまりにも美しいバラード「Think Of Me With Kindness」、ジェントルジャイアントらしい変さ爆発の「River」と全曲必聴の大傑作。プログレバンドにありがちな大曲や精神性などが無いところもいさぎよい。
