ジュリアン･ヘンリー率いるヒット・パレードの1stアルバム。
といっても、廃盤になっていた1stに４曲を追加して、ヴィニール・ジャパンが再発してくれたものなのだが、もともと1stもシングルを発表順に並べたものであったので、この全19曲を本当の意味での1stと捉えても構わないと思う。

このレコードは本当に特別の空気を閉じ込めることに成功している。僕はこれを聴くと必ず、今では忘れかけている若さゆえの青い激情のようなものが甦ってくる。それは、人それぞれに違うだろうが、僕だとテニスの試合に負けて泣いたこととか、彼女に初めて好きだと告白としたときのこととか、そういうようなことだ。ここには、甘酸っぱかったり、ほろ苦ったりする記憶を呼び覚ますような、魔法がかけられた永遠の青春ソングが19曲並んでいる。

演奏は、実に簡素で録音状態も良くないので、一聴するとショボイ音だと思うかもしれない。しかし、本当に良い曲、本当にエバーグリーンな曲は、AMラジオから流れてきても、グッと人の心を掴むように、いつのまにか音の問題など全く気にならなくなるだろう。次々と溢れ出るポップで美しく切ないメロディに惹きつけられ、気がつくといろんな思いを胸に抱いて、涙がこぼれそうになったりしている。それは、それぞれのシーンを思い出すというよりも、そのとき抱いていた自分の感情がリアルに甦ってくる感覚だ。

蛇足だが、ジョディ･フォスター主演の「君がいた夏」という青春映画があるのだが、僕はその映画のワンシーンの画像をコピーして、このアルバムのジャケットに入れてある。この青春映画のコンセプトと、この1stが持つ儚く美しき若さというイメージがぴったりだからだ。
