98年、一挙にメジャー・シーンに躍り出たアングロ・エイジアン・カルチャーの旗手、ダブで武装した音楽集団がついに新作をひっさげて帰ってきた。東洋パワー炸裂の新作だ。


内容 (「CDジャーナル・レビュー」より)

タイトルの“コミュニティ・ミュージック”とは、エイジアン・ダブ・ファウンデイションが関わっているワークショップの名称。そこではさまざまな人々が音楽を学びながら、社会の問題に対する意見を交換し合うという。こうした基盤を持つグループだけあって、ADFは音楽を通して真摯なメッセージを訴えかけてくる。彼ら自身は、在英エイジアン2世。が、そのメッセージはグローバルで、また、音楽的にもことさらインド色を強調していない。事実、ADFの音楽は、基本的にはレゲエやダブ、ドラムンベースなどの要素を混ぜ合わせたラガだ。とはいえ、ギターのスケールはインド風だし、インドの楽器も隠し味的に織り込まれている。ADFの主張はあまりにストレートな正論というか、諧謔を含んでいないので、曲によっては日本の新聞の社説のように説得力に乏しい。だが、エッジの利いたサウンドは説得力十分。英国ロック通を自任している人たちにこそ聴いてほしい。 (渡辺亨) --- 2000年04月号

おそらくミクスチャーというジャンルでかたずけられてしまうことが多いのだろうが、そんな一言では表せないほど多彩で奥の深い音楽だ。
最初は、ダブやドラムンベース等の音楽を聴いたことがなかったので、少しかまえてしまったが、曲の雰囲気が明るく、楽しいので聴きやすい。
リズムはおそらく打ち込みであろうが、ヒップホップ系で攻撃的。
メロディーは、レゲエ調であったり、インド音階による民族性の強いものであったりとバラエティーに富んでいる。少し早口でお経のようにも聞こえるクセの強いVoも曲調にマッチしてて最高だ。
なんとも不思議なグループだが、一度でもこの音楽に触れると、かなりハマってしまう。楽曲もツブ揃いでアルバムの前半は、自然に体が動いてしまうほどテンションの高い曲が続く。
彼らは、アジア系イギリス人としての生い立ちからか、民族差別や階級闘争に関する社会性が強い歌詞が多い。対訳のついた国内盤がお勧めだ。

とても長い名前のアーティストだが
深みのある楽しい曲がてんこ盛り。前半７曲くらいまで一切はずしがない。
こんなにエンターテインメント性が高いアルバムは久しぶり。
単にラップとカテゴライズするにはもったいない
不思議な世界にいざなってくれます。

お勧めは2.メモリー・ウォー、5.リディム・アイ・ライク
試聴の参考にどうぞ

このADFは、プライマル・スクリームのボビー・ギレスピーから絶賛されて有名になった。
さて、音の方だが、かなり大雑把なドラムパターンだ。なんか子供がだだこねてるような感じ。だがこれがいい。潔さすら感じる。
メロディーの方は、民族的、パワフル、そして暗さを感じさせない。やっぱ暗ーいのは嫌だからね。
おすすめは4曲目の『NEW WAY,NEW LIFE』。ドラム、メロディーのバランスがすばらしい。他にもいい曲結構あるよ。
