Album Details

Japanese only reissue of 1970 soundtrack for the film starring Marcello Mastroianni and Sophia Loren. Extremely unique score for Mancini with a sound similar in mood to Morricone. Most of the tracks are fairly dark and turgid. Nominated for best score.

昔デートで観に行って、なんかその時、イヤーンな予感がしたと思ったら案の定、その直後別れてしまった、という（ま、内容に関係なくそーゆー縁だった、という事ですな。はは、は……）、いずれにしても、オレの心のオールタイム名作ベスト50への入選は確実な（10本になんて絞れない…）永遠の名作の、これまた名盤であるサウンド・トラック。

イタリアからの移民の子供として育ったマンシーニにとり、イタリア映画界が誇る巨匠、デ・シーカとの仕事はまさに念願だったと思われ、いつもながらのバラエティーに富んだ曲調ながら、一定の抑えたトーンで統一された、それでいて渾身のスコアが展開されている。コーラス抜きのメイン・テーマを聴いただけでもそれは感じとれるが（マンシーニ自身のオーケストラ名儀で残された録音はいつも通り、コーラス入り）、それ以外にも、列車の車窓に広大なひまわり畑が姿を現わす場面、そして、静かに静かに情感を盛り上げ、やがて……、という見事なラスト・シーン（日本盤サントラLPの解説に「（観客／聴き手を）突き放すような」、とあった記憶があるが、実際そんな感じで、まさに圧巻である）等々、それぞれ映像と見事なシンクロぶりをみせていたが、音だけ単独で聴いても、やはりすばらしいものである。

ちなみに、この作品を愛する大槻ケンヂは、自ら率いていたバンド・筋肉少女帯（現在、活動休止中）のアルバム『UFOと恋人』の中でメイン・テーマに詞をつけ、そのまんま「ひまわり」の題でカヴァーしている（すなわち、大槻ケンヂ作詞、ヘンリー・マンシーニ作曲！）。エッセイイの文中で「ごめん、マンシーニ」と告悔（？）していたが、なかなかどうして真摯な仕上がりとなっており、機会があればぜひご一聴いただきたい。
